[ETC] Adding HTML to your writing in MS Word using Find and Replace

Oct 17, 2010 14:52

We sometimes use emphasis when we write. The problem is when we post it to LiveJournal (& etc), the emphasis do not translate into HTML.

But now it does, using the Find and Replace option in Word.

My name is Ivy. I live in Canada.

  1. Pressing Ctrl+H (or Apple+F, or "you guys know your Mac") will make the Find and Replace dialog show up. Click on More for more options.
  2. Click on Format and select Font in the dropdown. To replace italicized words, choose Italic, etc for bold/underline. Press OK.
  3. Click the Replace prompt/box to edit the options. Type in ^&, for ^& for bold, or ^& for underline.
  4. [optional] Click on Format, scroll down to Not Italics (or Not Bold), so that after you run it, you will not get the emphasis with the HTML tags.
  5. Click Replace All to run it. Repeat as needed.
^& is a special code for "Find What" text, where you replace what you find with what you found.

Ta-da. It's actually really easy. I didn't even know Word had this option until I was doing this online exam for a temp agency (lolol). Then I googled to make sure what I was doing was correct. Have fun writing!

P.S. Or user for italics and for bold to allow better accessibility:
In terms of accessibility, a screen reader uses the strong and em tags are emphasis levels. Screen readers will, as the W3C puts it, “change the synthesis parameters, such as volume, pitch and rate accordingly”. This surely nails it. If we were using b and i to have visual representation we can get to a higher level by using strong and em as they will be doing the same visual job while conveying the structure and working towards more acessibility.
