Oh hon, I'm so sorry. I very much know the pain of wanting a pet and the frustration when you give it your all and the pet is just not good for you and makes things worse instead of better.

There's a dog out there for you, I'm sure. Maybe they have an older more mature dog at the pound? Sometimes that helps - the mellowness of age. Or maybe a cat? Cats are a LOT less work than dogs and are very good company too.

I've thought about the whole cat-dog thing. I've had cats much of my life, and we get along vey well; even other people's cats, who tend not to like men/strangers/anyone who dances with Their Human, they tend to like me. I understand how to speak Cat and how to make them comfortable: use basic human avoidance behaviours. Don't look at them directly, don't move toward them, hold still and make space available on your lap. This is why it is often the case that cats LOVE people who are allergic--human avoidance behaviours are nearly the same as cat welcoming behaviours ( ... )
