They were about two hours pre-raid, and Jaina wasn't even hungry. She was, in fact, too focused to even worry about things like that, but that wasn't the point. She had to push aside her usual psychotic determination to get this done. You know, before she maybe got killed.
Piggy looked a little awkward bringing Wedge to see her in the mess hall. It wasn't the best of settings, but it was too public usually to be bugged, and private enough at the moment to not be overheard otherwise. Wedge sat across from her, and after a moment of awkward silence, the Gamorrean said, "I'll get them to bring you some things," before rushing off.
"He's a good minion," Jaina remarked. He didn't believe in the ruse because he'd helped come up with it, but he and Sharr seemed to have more stamina for it than she did.
"You do realize I'm shipping out very soon," Wedge told her. And yet here she was, a lowly officer and fake goddess calling the general down for a meeting. (In reality, he wasn't actually planning on going anywhere till the raid was over.)
"Yeah, I know. But I have a favor to ask."
He didn't give anything away in either his facial expression or his Force sense. "Oh?"
"I need to ask you to pull some strings, see what you can do to get a civilian into training," Jaina said.
And there the eyebrows went up. "Let me guess."
"You've seen how he works. He's a good pilot. He's got more sim experience than most of our rookies and he's actually here enough to do some good."
"You know that's not how we do things, Lieutenant," Wedge said, shaking his head.
"I'm off the record," she said.
"I'm not. I can tell you for a fact this is the first time I've ever had a lieutenant try to pull rank to get her boyfriend into the military," he told her. She knew that face. She'd seen that face on Chandrila when she and Colonel Darklighter had tricked him into meeting with Kyp. This was a man who didn't appreciate what he was being asked. "And I've seen some pretty gutsy moves. And you were quite the liability at Pyria and got off without any disciplinary action."
"I'm doing it because he can help and he wants to," Jaina said, trying not to get defensive. Despite all appearances she had to keep up with the stupid goddess thing, she knew this wasn't something where she could call the shots and make any sort of demands. She had to be the good little underling here. "I'm not trying to get him enlisted. I want him trained so he can fly when he's here. We lose pilots, it's one less spot we have to fill on our squadrons immediately."
"If he doesn't test well-"
"Then he doesn't get on a squadron," Jaina said.
That got another eyebrow raise from him.
"I'm not looking to endanger my pilots or anyone else's by playing favorites. It defeats the purpose of what we're trying to do here," she explained. Also, she sort of didn't want John getting blown up, especially if he wasn't ready for it. "I'm not asking that he be thrown into Rogue Squadron when he's not ready because I asked nicely. All I'm asking for is the training to give him a shot, and we can go from there. We wouldn't be here if I wasn't serious."
The thing was, Jaina was never going to find out that the reason she had gotten into Rogue Squadron at all was because Leia had gone to bat for her using something resembling that same argument.
Wedge gave her a hard stare, and said, "I'll take it under consideration. I give absolutely no guarantees, and the next time you're going to corner me like this, don't."
Jaina nodded quickly. "Understood, sir."
He stood, and to make it clear to him that she wasn't trying to step on any more toes than she already head, she even stood. She stopped short of a salute, though, knowing that he knew that just in case there was anyone spying, some appearances had to be kept.
Piggy returned with a plate of something really unappetizing a moment later, setting it down on the table in front of where Jaina was sitting. "He was supposed to wait for me to go," he complained.
"I wasn't going to remind him," she said, and paused. "I do have a favor to ask you, though."
"Of course, Great One. You don't even need to ask."
Jaina reached into a pocket, pulling out a folded piece of paper and a pen. She smoothed the paper out, setting it in front of him. "Sign this."
Piggy stared at it, and then stared at her.
"Proof for a
class assignment," she said. "Just trust me."
As soon as he signed it, still obviously trying not to think she was insane, Jaina pocketed the paper, and excused herself to get back to prepping Twin Suns for the upcoming raid.
