Jaina was still not usd to this whole mom to alternate universe children thing (and it had to be an alternate universe, because cute as they were, she was not going there for a very long, long time), but the thing that surprised her most was how easily the twins had accepted why John and Jaina didn't know them. Good to know Fandom could train ( Read more... )

Inara was looking a little shell-shocked as she walked into the room, Anya trailing behind her, studying her surroundings carefully.

"You too, Jaina?" Inara asked, spotting her roommate and the unknown child with her and hoping it was a correct assumption. "This is Anya. Darklighter."

"Hi, Anya. I'm so glad it's not just me," she admitted, not wanting to try and compare Anya to the kids she knew her version of Gavin had. Especially since she wasn't sure which of his were adopted. "I've got twins. This is Jaryd, and Jordin's upstairs with her daddy."

No, she didn't lose the teasing tone even when she wasn't saying it to John.

"Hello, Jaryd." She raised her eyebrows at Jaina and mouthed John? at her in a question. "I'm Inara. Twins? Is that very common?"

Anya waved, then went over to investigate Inara's side of the room. Some of her stuff was different.

Jaina nodded at her guess, and said, "Third generation in my family. Consecutively. He's an hour younger."

Meanhile Jaryd was investigating the open closet.

"At least they can keep each other occupied?" Inara asked, beginning to see some humor in the situation.

"If they're anything like me and Jacen, that's not a great thing," Jaina said.

Jaryd stuck his head out into the room and insisted, "I'm the good one!" No, he wasn't.

"I'm the good one and the bad one," Anya called across the room at Jaryd. "Is it hard just being good all the time?"

Inara rolled her eyes at Jaina. "Did you two get into much trouble?"

"No!" Jaryd called back, since it's not like he knew. "There are a lot of dresses in here," he added, making a face and then stumbling out of there like he was trying to get away from the icky girl stuff.

"We did," said Jaina, keeping one eye on "the good one". "I'm hoping it's not cosmic payback."

"It's because girls wear dresses," Anya explained (a bit loudly), as she wandered over to look at the pretty ones.

"How's John handling it?"

"Mom doesn't, 'less it's for a disguise or a stupid ball," Jaryd insisted, not knowing how many of those dresses were in fact Jaina's.

"In need of caffeine," Jaina said, "but he seems pretty okay. He volunteered to let them stay in his room, so I'll be up there till this gets resolved, and he's talking about forts and playing." And she didn't want to admit out loud that she sort of thought he was adorable with them. "How's Gavin?"

"My mom wears them all the time," Anya said proudly. "I like the sparkly ones best."

"He's..." Inara shrugged, "It was a bit of a shock, obviously, but he seems to be handling it better than I am, honestly. Children aren't exactly something Companions are trained to expect to have."

"But it's harder to kick people in dresses," Jaryd said, and hearing that, Jaina almost corrected him by saying that no, it depended on the dress and what else you were wearing, but now was not the time and she'd probably listened to Mara too well.

Turning her attention back to Inara, she asked, "Ever?"

"Uh uh," Anya said, having no such problems, "You just need to practice kicking in a dress so you don't trip and fall over. A lot."

Not that she'd ever done that, of course.

"Not generally, no," Inara said, trying not to be amused by her offspring, "With our current contraceptive technology, it is also highly unlikely." She glanced over. "I must have wanted her very much."

"I'm glad I don't have to wear them. I don't have to practice anything!" Jaryd said. It was nice to know the battle of the sexes raged on always, even when it came to kicking people in skirts. He paused. "Except Jedi stuff. I have to practice a lot."

"I mean, I can see why," Jaina said, turning to look at the kids. "Wanting that sort of thing, it's normal."

"You know Jedi stuff?" Anya was trying desperately not to be jealous about that, but ended up doing a bit of bragging herself. "My daddy's a pilot."

Inara was now looking at Anya in a very different light. "I guess so. Just not quite so soon, hopefully."
