Room 527, so late Friday it's Saturday

When the shuttle dropped Jaina off at the causeway, she had no idea what time it was, except she wasn't seeing a lot of people. She was guessing it was late. Realistically, it was probably late enough that she should just head back to her own room and worry about things in the morning, but she wasn't the slightest bit tired ( Read more... )

John had fallen asleep early. Such was what happened when you were up at ungodly hours with a droid baby and vague worrisome voicemail. Luckily, Todd was back with his fake parents. Unluckily, John hadn't heard Jaina come in his room.

She debated going downstairs and leaving him alone for all of about two seconds. Instead, she headed over to sit next to him on the bed, brushing her hair away as she leaned down to kiss him lightly.

It wasn't a bad way to wake up, opening his eyes and finding her there. "Hey," he said, groggy but smiling and automatically reaching for her. "You're back." He was a keen observer, too.

He'd been sleeping, so she'd let that pass. "Just now," she said, still quietly. She moved, turning so that she could lay down facing him, draping an arm around him. This was better than she'd felt in a while. "Hi."

"Hi," he repeated, wrapping one arm around her, remembering her last message and his subsequent worry. "You okay?"

The answer was no, but in Jaina language that equated to a little shrug and a tired-sounding, "It's been a long trip."

"Uh huh," John said, getting there was more to it, but really not wanting to push her. "I know you'll tell me about it when you feel like it. Right now, I'm just glad you're back."

"It's more that it's long," she said, snuggling closer just because she could now. "And so am I. You have no idea."

"I think I've got a pretty good idea," he replied, content to have her close again.

"How long's it been?" she wondered. She was learning to make that a standard question when she got back from home.

"It's Friday, or Saturday depending on the time," John replied. "You left on Monday. How long was it for you?"

"A few weeks." And considering how many messages she'd left... "I hope I didn't break your voicemail."

"No, though I was wishing for a physical machine to chuck out the window, or off the roof at a couple points," John replied. "I'm sorry I missed your calls."

"No, it's okay," she said. "You would have thrown it off the roof?"

"Well," John tilted his head back a bit, looking around. "I kinda threw a lot of things off the roof." That was an understatement. "For the sake of science, of course. But it's late and I'm much more interested in what you've been up to that would make you ask me to hit Gavin." Even after she called that off he'd considered doing it.

"You realize I'm asking you about that later," she warned. "I got an answer I didn't like on my Rogue Squadron commission from my version of him, which was exactly the one I had been expecting. But we ended up working together on stuff and he was really pretty great. It's complicated."
