The nightmare inmy_head July 2 2006, 17:05:01 UTC
The place was unfamiliar as Lily looked around. It was dark and there was a misty haze drifting through the air, obscuring her vision. There was a heavy scent in the air, wet and rancid. Lily could feel her stomach turn with unease as she took a step forward, blindly trying to find out where she was. Her ears picked up on a weird sort of whimpering over to the left and she turned toward the sound, unable to see the source.

The whimpering grew louder and louder and it started to sound more like nails on a chalkboard. Shaking her head to try to rid herself of the pain in her ears, Lily took another step toward the sound, not knowing where else to go. And another step. And another. But with the next step she took, Lily felt herself falling. Before she knew it, the woman hit something solid, the ground she assumed. But the sound was still getting louder.

As she started to get up, Lily felt a hand on her arm and she shrieked, ready to fight whatever it was off.

"Lily! Lily, it's me." The voice was familiar.

"Remus?"

"Yes Lily, it's me." It was definitely Remus' voice, but Lily couldn't see him. She could feel him, but she couldn't see him.

Once she was standing again, Lily looked around, trying to spot her lover. But in the dark and hazy air, she couldn't see anything. "Remus darling, where are you?"

There was a shuffling noise and the whimpering stopped suddenly. It was silent again. "Remus?"

"Over here, darling." His voice was now far away, but Lily was determined to find him. She started toward the voice, her paces fast yet careful. She didn't want to fall again. Calling out his name, the woman tried to find Remus. But everytime he answered her, it came from a different direction. Frustrated and confused, Lily gave up and sank down to the ground in dismay. What could she do?

"Remus!" she cried in desperation. "Remus, please..."

It was silent again. And then -

"I'm here," he whispered. This time, it came from right behind her. Lily turned to look and in an instant, she saw Remus. But instead of the man she loved, there was a terrifying face of a wolf hovering above her, hunger and lust burning in its eyes. Before she could react, it lunged at her.

Lily woke with a scream, looking frantically. Her breathing was heavy as she blinked at the bright sunlight that came in through the open window. It was morning. And she was alone in her bedroom. No Remus, no wolf. Nothing to be afraid of. But Lily was shaking with fear. The nightmares kept getting worse and worse and they haunted her at night, making it difficult to sleep.

Tossing the covers back, she hurried to get dressed and leave her bedroom. She was getting sick of these nightmares. She couldn't take it any longer. Lily needed to talk to someone about this, to get it off her chest. Maybe talking about it would help. But who? Who could she tell? Not Remus, for Merlin's sake, not him. It would only alarm him and send him off into a tangent. She knew that wasn't a good idea.

But what about James? He had been there that night and knew everything that had happened. He would understand.

Confident, Lily ran a brush quickly through her hair and left her small apartment to go see James.
