"All will be explained in time, dear friend," Robin said in an almost brusque voice as he turned, when the neared the tree and he moved to take Ghost's full weight before backing into the tree.
Once within the tranquil womb-like space of the tree, Robin set to work assessing the damage to Ghost's body. The vital organs were beginning to shut down. The lungs were choked with blood and compressed from air having escaped into his chest-cavity. There were two machine-things grafted into his chest, which seemed to have caused the bleeding. They were surrounded in old scar-tissue and fresh stress-tears. The heart was getting weak, realizing that it had no more blood to move it had slowed to a crawl. The less immediate but still vital organs were in varying states of disrepair. Ghost's body was not well maintained.
Inside the tree, the bleeding had slowed to the pace of thick sap, the heart had all but stopped and the lungs were frozen. Ghost's metabolism had merged with the tree , his vitals being fed fresh oxygen from the surrounding cellulose and the strain of their functions had been all but removed. He could exist like this indefinitely, within the tree, just as a burned and blackened stump held the promise of regrowth. But the damage was so severe, and a tree's patience so long, it was hard to say how many months it would take for the man to be stable enough to move again.
