http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/106839963/31331900 Appearance: The first thing you'll notice about Hermione is her unruly hair. It's what stands out now that her front teeth are not quite so big. Ahem. It used to be completely unruly when she was younger, but she's rather grown into her looks. She isn't the prettiest girl, by far, and she is more than fine with that. Being smart is totally more attractive, okay. Her hair is still rather bushy, but she smooths it a bit. Her eyes are brown and she's small, but not glaringly so.
Personality: Hermione is a Gryffindor. This makes her, by default, a brave and strong-headed girl. She is the embodiment of courage under fire. Albus Dumbledore himself praised her for the use of her cool intellect in inescapably difficult times. The voice of reason among friends, she is often the one that can come up with a solution and quickly. Hermione is known as the cleverest witch of her age. She isn't only innately bright, she is also diligent when it comes to learning. She's basically a walking Encyclopedia. There isn't a book within her reach that she hasn't read. Despite the fact she is Muggle-born, she knows most everything there is to know about magic. She learns things by heart. Her knowledge on most things, and her confidence in knowing them, can lead to her being a bit of a know-it-all. Okay, a huge know it all and a bossy one at that, but her heart is in the right place.
She doesn't like leaving anything to chance and she is easily irritated with those that live with their heads up in the clouds. She loathes Divination for that very reason. Hermione is determined and more importantly, decisive. She is completely righteous when it comes to everyone being equal. This goes for Muggles and Wizards, humans and elves. She even goes so far to become an activist when she sees the slavery treatment of elves.
Hermione Granger is that student. You know which one. The one that sits in the very first row of the classroom if she can help it, and is always the first one to raise her hand to answer a question. She'll also wave said hand around impatiently if she isn't called upon immediately, because she will burst if she does not say the answer. She always knows the answers, and she doesn't display her smarts to prove she is better than others or to be applauded for it. It comes from a need of hers to share and receive knowledge. It's important for Hermione to learn. It's important for Hermione to excel. It's important for her to give her best in whatever she throws her mind and heart into.
She is a huge fan of set rules, law and order. Hermione does not like breaking those rules, which isn't to say she won't if she believes it's necessary, and often she'll believe it's necessary out of loyalty to her friends. Which brings me to one of the most important aspects of Hermione's personality. She is unfailingly loyal. She stands by Harry and her friends through absolutely anything. She'll keep a secret, she'll break the rules, she'll go to the lengths necessary to help Harry and his fight against the darkest lord of all times.
A defining moment for her as a character, to me, is in the seventh book when Ron leaves in the midst of them searching for the Horcruxes. Hermione was heartbroken, and still, she kept searching for the keys to stop the dark lord.
It comes full circle when considering what she says to Harry at the end of the first book. Cleverness and books are something she treasures, yes, but there are far more important things--like friendship. Hermione Granger prides herself on using her mind, while also being ruled by her heart, never forsaking one for the other. She does what she does out of loyalty and love, and because she knows it's the right thing to do.
History: Hermione Granger was born to Muggle parents. They're both dentists, and her life was uneventful until she received her acceptance letter to Hogwarts. She was surprised, but very pleased. Harry's story began with a scar on his forehead and the death of his parents. Hermione's story with Harry began with a first meeting gone wrong at a train station and a troll in a bathroom. You absolutely can't fight a twelve-foot troll and not become friends, after all.
Hermione, Harry, and Ron Weasley became inseparable. She was the brains of the trio, and they always embarked on adventures. Hermione didn't care for Harry because of his infamous story or because he was the chosen one. She and Ron became his friends because of Harry, himself, and that made all the difference.
Being best friends with the Chosen One, however, has its consequences. Lord Voldemort has always been a present and great threat in Harry's life and ergo, those around him. Hermione took it upon herself to help both Harry and Ron in the academic aspect of their lives, while also making sure they don't get themselves killed. This, obviously, required dozens of lectures throughout the years. Through the difficult battles and the fights, their bond became unshakable. They fought alongside Harry and with Dumbledore at the head of the school, Hermione felt secure in their ability to defeat the darkest wizard of their time once and for all.
Until their sixth year at Hogwarts. Albus Dumbledore is killed, but before he could die, he did disclose to Harry what exactly could be done to defeat Lord Voldemort once and for all. His soul was split in seven pieces and scattered throughout the world. They're called Horcruxes, and if all seven Horcruxes are destroyed, so would Lord Voldemort be destroyed.
Harry was hellbent on setting out to find those Horcruxes, preferably alone so no one else would be at risk because of him. Hermione and Ron were unwilling to let him do so. They were in it together, after all. There was no way Hermione would leave him alone with such a mission.
Except she would never go on said mission. She'd find herself in Chicago instead, via Rift. How very impolite of it.
Writing Sample: "It won't be forever," she whispers into the cat's fur. Crooshanks curls further into her lap. She sits at the foot of her bed at Hogwarts, not sure what she is waiting for. There is much to be done and for the first time since she can remember, she does not have an alarming desire to do it. Hermione wants to surround herself with everything that is familiar for just a few minutes. What's familiar is a comfort to her. She can be in control with what she knows, and she knows plenty.
The school is a comfort to hurt. The room within it is a comfort to her. The books that flood the four walls, the books she knows by heart, but most especially Hogwarts: A History, are forever a comfort to her.
She will soon return home and erase herself from her parents' memories. She won't exist for them and as hurtful as the thought is, as much as her chest clenches painfully with the reality of it, she knows it's necessary.
And Hermione isn't one to forsake what is necessary because it is difficult.
The books and the room and her cat are a comfort, certainly.
But when it comes down to it, Hermione doesn't need them for strength. The strength comes from her alone. Everything she needs right now can't be found in her books or her learning. What she needs is in her mind and in her heart. What she needs is to do what must be done.
They've come so far. It's time they won.
It's time Harry won.
