I understand what it's like to be "stuck" in a place where you really don't have a whole lot of freedom to alter the appearance or layout of the room. Since I'm a single soldier, I live in the barracks, which is like the dorms (only a little more substandard kind of living.) I cannot paint my room either, so I've bought things to hang on the wall to give it a more personized feel. I like the asian culture so my walls are covered with wall scrolls of paintings of the Chinese mountains, I have Japanese kanji of such symbols as love and strength, a giant fan, and a parasol. Even my bed set matches the theme with the black and red. I was able to re-arrange what little furniture was issued to me in a way i felt i was able to have the most space and function in my room. Oh and something as simple as a plant can help. It may not purr or bark, but you can talk to the spirit and take care of it like a delicate child. i have an exotic orchid that I've named and I talk to her on a daily basis. I know it's not much, but sometimes even the littlest things can make a big difference.
I may not know exactly how you feel, but I do understand what it's like to feel 'trapped.' You are never alone, my kindred.
Blessed Be.
