Just To Gush

I finally read all the yaoi I bought at AnimeExpo. It's so sad that some of the most gorgeous yaoi have the crappiest story/translation ever. Like one even had the main character's name spelled two different ways in two different chapters. They should fire their copy-editor. But anyway, I read the really gorgeous Korean one I bought today, and it was fucking awesome! It's called "U Don't Know Me," which, granted, is a pretty shitty title especially with the "U." I was like how the heck did netspeak make its way into this? But then again it's Korean and Korean is alphabetical so maybe their netspeak is similar to English? (As opposed to, say, Chinese.) But the art is really well done, there are lots and lots of text - it's like a book, but I guess you will need them because the story is deep and tackles actual issues like coming out to parents. There is no clear seme/uke dynamic - the supposed "bottom" is actually a pretty tough bully guy who will beat up people randomly at school and can say "no" effectively. (I mean he carried a butterfly knife with him for crying out loud.) There're definitely some yaoi tropes (like oh I don't know it all started with this pseudo-rape scene, but then again you think about it the uke said he'd definitely fight him off if he wanted to, which he didn't, which, considering his fighting skills, is kinda true.) All the minor characters have their own backstory. The parents (from both sides) are reasonable people and reacted pretty realistically, ish (this is yaoi we're talking about after all). I am impressed.

Arg I should've bought more Korean yaoi from that one table that I couldn't find again after the first day, if I knew they're gonna be like this. Then again maybe this one is just special and good. But if you read yaoi I definitely recommend this one.
