Management by Compromise

Jan: Hey everyone! I finished build 3!
Emma: Build 4. Build 3 was 2 weeks ago.
Jan: That wasn't an official build!
Emma: Then why did you send me an official build notice for it. And why did I test with it? And why do I have official bugs against it? And why do I have an official test plan documenting all of this?
Jan: This is build 3.
Emma: No, it isn't. It's build 4.
Jan: 3!
Emma: 4!
MacroMan: Quiet you two! Emma, let me explain where Jan is coming from.
Emma: I don't care where he's coming from. It's not build 3.
MacroMan: But internally, it's still build 3.
Emma: He can call it whatever he wants to in his mind. In the real world, it's build 4.
MacroMan: It hardly matters as the next build is coming out tomorrow.
Jan: And that will be build 4.
Emma: Build 5!
MacroMan: It will be build 5. Because QA (which is to say, Emma) has already started testing on build whatever number it was and logging bugs against it.
Jan: So we're skipping build 4?
Emma: No. We tested on build 4.
MacroMan: Yes, you can think of it as skipping Build 4 if you like.
Emma: Except, of course, that there are bugs logged against it.
MacroMan: Well, yes.
Jan: Okay, so for no particular reason, just to please Emma, and Malimana, we're just randomly skipping Build 4.
MacroMan: Yes. Emma, say "yes".
Emma: Um...
MacroMan: Emma, remember T minus 16 and 1/2. Now say "yes."
Emma: Yes.
