Day 1

It is October 1st and closing in to my favourite time of year. I’m typing of course about Hallowe’en. I had the spirit early this year but held off until today to start celebrating in my own way. I’m going to try and post a little more this month about my interest in things that go bump in the night and other things I consider cool and eerie whether true or merely entertaining.

To start, Horror Night last night took place in the sanctum. The movies we watched were very suspenseful. The first was an Italian horror film named “REC”. It was brought over and Americanized (aren’t they all lately?) as the movie “Quarantine”. I haven’t seen “Quarantine” yet as I prefer to watch original versions first. (I find that 19 times out of 20 the original version is loads better than the remake.) “REC” was a very down to earth, very tense movie. If you can find it, I highly recommend watching it subtitled. ( I always recommend subtitles in foreign films) The acting was very good and the overall story though simple was made more intense by increasing levels of claustrophobia. I recommend it.
On the scare the crap out of Nicole movie scale I would place it at: Hiding under the kitchen sink for three days.

The second movie was a Japanese Onryo movie called “Chakushin Ari”. You might know it in its Americanized version “One missed call”. While I didn’t enjoy it as much as other Onryo movies such as Ju-on and Ringu, it was a pretty good and suspenseful movie. I’ve read around the net that the Americanized version is pretty damn terrible which is regrettable since the original seems pretty good to me. On the scare the crap out of Nicole movie scale I would place it at: Turning off her cell phone and flushing the battery down the toilet.

Fortunately I managed to go into both movies knowing pretty much nothing about them which is the way I prefer it. Overall the star of the evening was “REC” which had Encaf1 and I on the edge of our seats for an hour and a half that easily felt like 2 hours.
