Where am I and what is this place? How did it come to be- and why are we left to our own devices?

You're in the city of Discedo. Destroyed before any of us got here, so we don't know why it's like this.

The scientists (they brought us here) leave us alone most of the time. Sometimes they intervene in things, give us supplies, or cause problems for us.

So my suspicions were correct; we are a part of a bigger scheme, unable to control the situation and moved about at their will.

That's true. The control we've got is small, if you think about it. We can't even leave the city (safely.) It's happened, but for the most part we're trapped in the walls of it.
