SPON (I think it was SPON, at least) predicted something like this - that the judges would bump Plushenko down due to his perceived arrogance. Shit out of luck on his part, I suppose.

Yup, I think it was SPON. But still, that doesn't change things at all - the gold medal should go to the best skater, not the one the judges perceive as morally superior ~_~. And besides, Plushenko isn't arrogant, he just doesn't like the judges. Which he shows. Which is probably stupid of him *sigh*.

I thoroughly agree. Plushenko is technically superior to both Lycasek and Takahashi, but seeing someone who is as technically accomplished as that makes people want to knock him down a notch. I haven't seen the finale but what I saw of Lycasek before makes me agree with you - Plushenko and Takahashi are better. Which makes me wonder if there's not a bit of racism involved here as well. But yeah, I think the majority of the reason is that Plushenko's perceived as an arrogant asshole which... well, he kinda is, but he has all reason to.

Well, I didn't want to outright say the r-word :( But, yeah, that might be a part of the problem. However, for some strange reason these things tend to happen more if the games are on the American continent, maybe for the sake of the spectators? They don't have a problem with Shaun White (you know, the crazy snowboard-guy) who is also technically superior to everyone else and an arrogant asshole or Lindsey Vonn, but they hate Plushenko. And, yeah, Plushenko is Russian, White and Vonn are Americans. I don't want to create a conspiracy theory here but it does make you think...

It is so funny (? amusing? interesting?) to see the different reactions to the Plushenko thing on my flist ^^;; (I, uh. Still haven't watched yet. Maybe tomorrow with lunch!) Also, American though I may be, and in fact even from the same city as the Snowboarding Lion, uh. >___>;; Well. You know my usual feelings about 'doing it for teh amerikanz' and all that. >_<;;

also I think he needs a haircut but maybe that's my Old Age showing -__-

Oh, well, I'm not saying Lysacek was bad, not at all. It was just that Plushenko was better, technically and IMO also artistically (apart from that - if Takahashi didn't slip, I'd even have put him above Plushenko.) He should just stop letting the judges know that he doesn't take them seriously. Because it wasn't the technical part where they could deduct so many points, it was the other part and I still think even there he was better than Lysacek who only replayed his program, like some sort of robot, took not risks and won with a totally average program and a, admitteldy, good execution :/

I like long hair! I just think watching snowboarders is generally boring *hides*

Well, like I said in my post, I don't think the scores were obviously wrong. I mean, they were close enough that a twitch could have put Plushenko ahead. But I don't think Plushenko skated nearly as well as he is capable of. His jumps were really wobbly and Scott Hamilton was right in calling him a cat for his ability to still land some of them. Not that I know how scoring works (I really need to try and figure it out sometime).

But yeah, Evan's just a robot. >/

Also, NBC was so busy fawning all over Evan -- did they think he would cry or something? pssh -- that the camera didn't catch Plushenko jumping off the top step of the podium! :(

Yes, Plushenko could have done better. About the scoring: From what I gathered everyone gets a certain number of points for the components they have to have in their programs. If they botch something there are reductions in the technical part, if they do something that's not required, like quadruples, they get extra points. As for the artistical skills, I have no idea how they do that (if I did I'd probably know why Lysacek won gold. On the other hand, even our commentators, usually not fans of Plushenko, were outraged and it reassured me that they obviously don't really know how those points are collected either).

Our commentators didn't say anything else about Lysacek during the whole ceremony, they only talked about how stellar Takahashi was and how bitter Plushenko must feel :(

The annoying thing was that there really was nothing to show about Lysacek. Okay, that first part where he was watching the monitor and found out he won. (I am still kind of weirded out that Shen/Zhao were there to hug him. Yes, they have the same choreographer, but I didn't realize that that was such a bond...?) But after that he just had the same smile plastered on his face and didn't do anything. Even his interview had no content, but they still keep showing it. Blargh.

I swear, Takahashi's name has come up exactly once in all the recap I've been watching, and it was practically an afterthought: "Oh yeah, and Takahashi got bronze." *mutter*
