This is a catch phrase that seems to defines Yoh’s life--Yoh saying shortly upon being introduced that his dream is simply to have a simple life; one that he can do nothing but roll around and sleep all day. The young shaman is laid back to a fault--if it wasn’t for his fiance, Anna Kyouyama, pushing him to train, the Asakura would have never done that much himself, and would have perhaps died before even entering the Shaman Fight Tournament. Though, Yoh being laid back is not always a fault.

“However, Yoh... no matter what happens, can take whatever comes his way. That’s why he’s so powerful.”

The shaman often takes situations with ease to the point where characters become exasperated or irritated with his almost constant deameanor. However, as the quote said, this is also the source of much of Yoh’s strength. Though, this might also go hand-in-hand with what seems like Yoh’s goals at first.

But, that is not what his “true” goal is.

As a shaman, many human characters feared his ability. Because of his ability to see and speak wit h spirits, other people with non-spiritual powers would merely see him speaking to himself, and some even became fearful of some of the things that would happen around him. His goal is to also create a world without lonliness.

“I don’t want to associate with this power I have. In school, there’s no one that wants to talk to me. When I speak, people tend to look at me with strange expressions. I... want to see if I can change this situation. That’s why I recently decided to become Shaman King.”

No matter what others have done to Yoh--no matter how evil, or bad someone’s intentions seem, Yoh always tries to find the good in others. As a result of this attitude, he was able to save Anna from her own angered and corrupted heart before she died. And, it was because of this that Yoh has made the allies and friends that he has. Ren, who would kill without hesitation. Faust, who had almost killed his best friends. The most important factor in this, however--is perhaps Hao, who appears to be the main antagonist of the series. Hao, who Yoh was “born to kill”. Instead of wishing to defeat Hao by murdering him, however, Yoh’s general strategy for defeating him in the Shaman Tournament is to open Hao’s heart.

Instead of seeing Hao as someone who is evil, he sees Hao as someone who is a lonely, sad being who can no longer trust any one around him.

Though, Yoh also believes that “bad people can’t see spirits.” As a fellow Shaman, and even Yoh’s twin brother, Yoh cannot believe that Hao is truly evil.

Even with Yoh’s faults as a protagonist--Yoh will not hesitate to step in and attempt to help others if he feels that they need it. Upon meeting Manta, who had appeared to have been bullied and beaten up by others (namely, Bokuto no Ryu who had later became a close ally to Yoh), he helped Manta “simply because Manta needed help.” However, Yoh isn’t one to always remain calm. When a situation involves his friends, or another life being taken, he will react emotionally. As a more or less “cliche” personality trait of a main character, he will not hesitate to sacrifice himself he feels it’s needed to help others. Though, this part of him is also naive to a fault--trusting many enemies, and even being tricked by them at times.

Though, he’s also no force to be underestimated. As Hao’s brother, Yoh gains more and more power within the series quickly to a degree that his friends call his power “fearful”. Because of the fact that he can take situations calmly--he can often keep a clear mind and find a way to fight back quickly, no matter what danger he might be.

As Yoh develops, he becomes more and more mature--though, some things may never change. Yoh, after all, shows his fears towards his fiance’s often abusive treatment. In his words “Anna has always made me cry everytime that we’ve met.” Though, as the manga has said, Yoh meeting Anna was “love at first sight”, if anything.

And as cliche as it may be to add, Yoh is a type of character that “can melt even the coldest heart” with his warm personality. And just as well, the Asakura enjoys peaceful situations with his friends more than anyone else--saying that “these are the moments he loves the most”, no matter how much some characters bicker with one another.

OTHER: The marijuana leaf seems to be his ~thing~. I wish I was kidding.
