I've been slowly falling in love with doom metal in various forms for the past couple of years. When I was first getting into more obscure forms of heavy metal a decade ago, doom had little appeal for me. I wanted loud, fast, and hateful, so tended to stick to death metal and (especially) black metal. Doom was too slow, too obscure, too thick. But, lately, it's been tugging at my soul for various reasons. Part of it is that I've developed a bit more patience, rediscovering the value in slowly building a song across expertly crafted movements. I love the unbridled ferocity of the likes of black metal, but it is tiresome after a while. Also, as I age, I find the world wearing more heavily upon me. Few genres of music capture that sense of weariness, heaviness, and despondency the way good doom can. In the right mood, with enough patience and the desire to sink into the music, doom can be transcendent in a way few other genres can manage.
It also helps that the last couple of years have seen some truly magnificent albums released in the genre. Pallbearer's debut, Sorrow And Extinction, was the crack in the dam for me. For the first time, I really relished the style in all of its cathartic glory. This year's follow up, The Foundations of Burden, is quite possibly even better. I'm especially surprised by how much I'm loving Yob's current record, considering they've never quite grabbed me in the past. And Subrosa (who, with three female members, are a relative rarity in the metal world) have put out two superb records in the past three years.
Right now, I'm diving into the latest Earth record. Shockingly, there are vocals, which hasn't happened in a very long time.
A little playlist for ya. It ranges from so-called "traditional" doom, which is barely out of the Sabbath stage, to more modern stuff, with a little stoner buzz thrown in. I could've kept going for hours, but this is a reasonable 116 minutes.
