Other Characters: Perry and Thom
Character Name: Sister Peaceful Hortense Elaine Warren. Just call her Sister Peace.
Series: Castle Waiting by Linda Medley
Age: It's never stated, so let's say somewhere between 50 and 55.
From When?: When Doctor Fell is going rather crazy towards the end of the published comics. Her deal will be to give her some guidance on how to help him.
Inmate/Warden: Warden! Peace, apart from being a nun, is a kind, friendly woman who believes that everyone deserves a second chance. She's not a saint (her order of nuns is... a little odd c:) but she is without a doubt a good person and she sees the potential for good in almost everyone. She says at one point: "We don't all have to get into Heaven through the Front Gate." and to the reply that the back gate of Heaven is very close to the front gate of Hell, she simply replies that "[she'll] just have to make sure they're headed towards the right one." Her attitude is that everyone can be saved. The order of nuns to which she belongs is called the Solicitine Order, and the sisters' main purpose is to give people what they need not what they want, which is just about the perfect qualification for a warden. She's also not above playing a little dirty to help people, which will be useful as a warden.
Item: Can I say her church grim,
Piety? He's a little dog- or cat-like bat-winged ghast creature and he'll just screech and lead her to her inmate in times of trouble because I think it's kind of funny. If not him, then her cross.
Abilities/Powers: No supernatural powers. She's a good bartender and practically ran a circus games tent, so she has a good handle on slight-of-hand and trickery and she's good at gambling. She has a little bit of first-aid knowledge thanks to her association with Doctor Fell and her time as a nun on the battlefield, but considering she's from a Medieval-style world, it's not exactly modern knowledge.
Personality: At first glance, Sister Peace seems to just be a nice, friendly, middle-aged nun who likes to joke around with people. And she certainly is all of those things-- she enjoys making jokes, poking fun at people and playing practical jokes like a big kid, and there are many examples of this. One of the first things she does when Jain's baby Pindar is born is make off with him for a few minutes to get Rackham (the Castle's steward, a stork-man) to put the baby in a sling and pretend to be the actual baby-carrying stork for a laugh, for example. She likes to surprise people, like when she reveals to Jain she has a beard without saying a word, after they've known each other for a good few months. She's incredibly good-natured and generous, and she can also take a joke at her own expense very well. She has a thick skin, thanks to the whole bearded lady thing, working in a circus and dealing with people who have treated her as a freak or a joke, and will shrug off insults like they're nothing.
She is somewhat mercenary and is totally not above gambling and striking deals to get what she wants ( it's usually something trivial), and she wouldn't be entirely opposed to cheating either. Little white lies and harmless cheating aren't entirely off the table just because she's a nun. She likes to gamble and make bets, but it's mainly as a way of passing the time and keeping her hand in. It's never in a way that could really be seen as gambling for greed or money's sake. When Rackam initially refuses to carry Pindar in the sling, Peace immediately offers him a deal--do it and she'd wipe his immense friendly gambling debt clean. It's pretty clear that she was never going to call in the debt, and she cares little about the money, as she offers this deal for a few seconds of laughter.
Sister Peace is quite impulsive (though less so now than she was as a younger woman). She ran away from home to join the circus in her late teens without a word to her parents and then she ran away from the circus without telling anyone to help her best friend. This impulsivity doesn't usually get in the way of anything she considers to be a duty or something she has to do. It also manifests in smaller ways; she might decide in the middle of the night to try baking some noglog (delicious alcoholic cake stuff the Abbey makes) or go for a ride around the yard on her velocipede. She's quite determined and if she gets an idea into her head, she'll find a way to make it happen. This is likely to lead to her taking her inmate on impulse picnics and that sort of thing.
The Solictine Order's motto is "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." meaning that each day has enough trouble of its own and there's no real use worrying about the troubles tomorrow will bring until tomorrow comes. It's a creed of living in the now, and Sister Peace has made this an essential part of her outlook. Her time spent as a battlefield nun helped her to solidify this belief, as the horrors of war and death she saw there could be dealt with most easily by taking them as they came rather than worrying about what would be coming next. To more easily help the wounded and soothe the dying, Peace took the Solcitine Order's motto and made it a part of herself. This whole experience has made her very mentally resilient. Seeing the bad things in the world only made her more determined to do good. She's a practical, down-to-earth woman who worries about the problems immediately before her as they come. When someone is hurt, she looks for a solution or a way to ease their pain, and will keep searching for it even if it's not immediately obvious.
Peace has lead an interesting life, and it hasn't always simply been about fun and games. She's tough and not easily phased-- not much worries her, though she cares deeply for her friends and if they're upset or hurting, it certainly does weigh on her somewhat. She will do what she can to find a way of giving them what they need, whether that's a friend, someone to verbally knock some sense into them or something else. The concept of giving people what they need rather than what they want is another central tenet of the Solcitines. She's sensible and smart and will certainly not cave to other's desires just to make them happy. She believes that happiness comes when people have what they need; she has been on the receiving end of this belief and it certainly helped her more to not be given what she wanted at the time. Peace is also quite perceptive and can read people fairly well, a skill she picked up over the years from a lot of different places, not least from the Abbess, and this helps her determine what to do the help the people around her.
Sister Peace is, of course, religious, though that's not something that's actually touched on a lot in the comic. She clearly believes in God and has a lot of faith, but she's not preachy and the Order isn't into self-denial or anything like that. The Solcitines are much more about love and helping everyone they can. Due to the world Peace lives in, she's religious and also superstitious. There's a whole cohort of different fantasy creatures in Sister Peace's world and she holds a lot of beliefs about them. She likes fairytales and stories and enjoys learning, so the library is going to be wonderful for her.
On the Barge, Peace will likely find the whole place and its residents fascinating. She'll read a lot and try to make friends. Floods and ports won't phase her much; she's quite easy-going and there's not a lot that she gets embarassed about, so she'll be laid-back enough to deal with them quite well. With an inmate, Peace will go for the friend route for the most part, talking to them a lot and trying to work out the ways she can help them. She'll probably play games with them or take them on field trips to the CES and the library and that sort of thing. Her wardening style will probably be quite ninja; she'll make friends and play the fool a little and lay down wardening groundwork by being sneaky. She won't be a pushover though, and she won't let her inmate get away with anything bad. Despite her good-nature, she can get quite fierce and she won't hesitate to do so if her inmate is terrible.
Path to Redemption: N/A
History: Before she was named, Peace was the quietest, most well-behaved infant you've ever seen, but as soon as her parents gave her the name 'Peaceful', they sealed their fate. From then on, Peace was a tiny terror of a tomboy, who loved getting dirty, running around and playing tricks. Her father ran an inn and she learned to pour ale and serve drinks pretty much as soon as she could walk. She wanted nothing more than to run the inn when her father gave it up. As she grew up, she became very popular with the men in the village because of her cool head and the way she could easily get to the heart of any of their problems; whenever they had an issue, they went to the pub, talked it over with Peace, and everything was fine.
Then her beard grew in. She didn't mind that much. Even bearded, not much changed in Peace's life-- she still served drinks and offered advice to the village men. By chance, she heard about bearded ladies in circuses, and coincidentally, a circus happened to be set up in a nearby town. Without a word to her parents, she ran away to join it and make her way as an attraction. However, when she got to the circus, it turned out it already had a bearded lady-- Clytemnestra, the Queen of the Nile, who had a MUCH more luxurious beard than Peace-- and she instead ended up working in the ale tent for a short time. She had a gift for gambling and running games, so after a short while, Reggie and Alphonse, alemaster and gamesmaster respectively, set her up working in the games tent.
During her time at the circus, after discovering that Clytemnestra wasn't actually from Egypt and spoke perfect English, she struck up a friendship with her. Nessie was the wife of the owner of the circus, who turned out to be a bastard who had only married her so that she would be forced to stay with him and perform, while he hated her beard and was cheating on her. Nessie found this out and told Peace, who decided that that shit could not stand and quickly made a plan to run away from the circus and seek refuge in an Abbey (made entirely of other bearded ladies) she had been told about. They snuck away when the caravans were rolling out and fled. The owner chased them down, but they managed to reach the Abbey in time, where the sisters of the Solicitine Order took them both in, putting on a big show to scare away the men.
Peace and Nessie both joined the Order for a time, learning from Abbess Clarice about the teachings of the Solicitines and coming to love the place and the other sisters like family. During her time at the order, Peace also helped a servant man and his sister (who were being essentially treated as property by the mill owner) gain their freedom, with some trickery and help from Reggie and Alphonse. Eventually, with some sneaky pushing from Peace, Nessie married a man from the village.
After a number of years in the Abbey, Peace began to get restless and wanted to spread the word of the Solicitines to more of the world. She decided to wander for a time. Leaving the Abbey was hard-- Nessie and her children, the sisters and the Abbess were Peace's family. The Abbess in particular didn't want her to leave, as she wanted Peace to become the next Abbess after her. Peace declined the offer and left anyway, setting Sister Skeeter to be the next Abbess. She went home first, to visit her parents, then travelled through many different lands, selling the Abbey's produce, running sideshow games, and all sorts of other things to make her way. She tended to the wounded in wars, cleared battlefields of the dead and eventually found her way to Castle Waiting.
In the Castle, she set about restoring the chapel and caring for the people who lived there, helping out with just about anything and doing things to help the residents to get what they needed. She had a pretty quiet life there, making friends with and quietly looking after all of the other residents. She cared for Henry when he came in with his heart broken, throughout his recovery after Doctor Fell placed iron bands around his heart to hold it together. She cared for a pregnany Jain when she came seeking refuge from her abusive husband. She took particular care of Doctor Fell who is, as Peace puts it "disturbed". He's a brilliant surgeon but is troubled by symptoms of what looks like it might be schizophrenia. Anyway, Peace has been looking for a way to help him that isn't just humouring his delusions, which is where the Admiral and her deal comes in. (Along with her ever-itchy feet.)
Sample Journal Entry: [After a few moment's fiddling, there's a woman, around her fifties, wearing a white wimple with a black veil over it. She has a cross around her neck and a strange-looking dog-bat thing on her shoulder. The room behind her is from a medieval castle--think big stone walls and tapestries--and it's very messy. She gives a cheery wave and smile before she continues.] Hello there! I'm still not quite sure how this thing works, but I hope I'm getting through all right. I'm Sister Peaceful Warren, but please call me Sister Peace or just Peace or even Sister if you like. I'm here as a new warden. I'd like to get started as soon as possible, but I think I heard somewhere that our charges aren't assigned right away. That's right, isn't it?
[She frowns a little as she asks that. She likes to be busy and the whole reason she's here is to help people. But then she smiles again and moves on.] ...well, I'm sure it'll happen soon enough! In the meantime, what is there to do around here? I'm looking forward to meeting all of you. No doubt you've got some wonderful stories, and I'm just dying to hear them. So who wants to play tour-guide?
[There's a moment's pause before she adds:] Oh, is there a chapel I could help in? [And another little one, before the next question, which comes with a little grin.] And does anyone know any good card games?
Sample RP: Sister Peace walked sedately down the corridor, hands tucked together inside her cuffs, glancing around the hall with interested eyes. The Barge was quite a place. No doubt there would be plenty of stories to tell Jain on rainy days after she got back to the Castle. The strange journal devices were very interesting. Perhaps Henry or the Hammerlings would have known more about how something like that might have been made. It was probably some kind of magic. All Peace knew was that they provided a very easy way to talk to everybody. The people on the Barge were fascinating! So many different worlds and different experiences they'd had. Peace grinned at the thought. It would be a joy to make friends with them and talk about the places they'd been and the things they'd seen.
Piety made a screeching noise from where he sat on her shoulder and fluttered his wings. "Shush, you," Peace tutted, poking her tongue out at him. She pulled a hand out and gave him a little scratching under the chin before starting up the stairs. She wondered how long it would be before she was given an inmate to help. Inmate. It wasn't exactly a nice word, was it? She frowned a little, pausing at the top of the stairs that opened out onto the first floor. No, she didn't really like the term, even if this was a prison ship.
Glancing into the dining hall before she tackled the next flight of stairs, she smiled at the people inside. The kitchen was large and everything was so bright. There were some pretty good smells coming from inside, too. Probably close to dinner time. Ah well, she had better be quick then, hadn't she? She gave a quick wave to the people and moved on, hitching her skirts a little and taking the stairs two at a time. Piety gave a disgruntled sqeak and dug his claws in to stay balanced.
She reached the top and took a deep breath before opening the door. She gasped as she saw the huge array of bright stars and planets stretching out over the deck, a huge, excited grin spreading quickly over her face. It was beautiful. Piety screeched again and leapt from her shoulder as she stepped outside, flying to the length of his tether and circling around her head. She laughed and ran with him to the edge of the deck, giving a little whoop of excitement. This was more like it. Just wait until she told Jain and Rackham and Henry and the rest about this. They'd be so jealous their ears would turn as green as little Pindar's. No matter what she was here for, there was time to enjoy something like this and Peace intended to make the most of every minute of it.
Special Notes: NOTHING IMPORTANT. My samples are kind of dodge. This app was really quick. :c
