Hmm. Why is it that so many American fantasy writers seem to have a problem with fanfiction? Well, maybe I'm exaggerating, but I've seen evidence that Anne McCaffery (Dragonriders of Pern series), Anne Rice (Interview with a Vampire series), and Lynn Flewelling (Nightrunner series) all are publicly against fanfiction of their works. .... I don't get it. Why would they care? I see people throwing around big words like "copyright issues!" but since no one is making money off fanfic, the original works are not being copied and distributed like Napster songs or anything, and fanfiction creates a wealth of participatory interest in lieu of waiting around several years for sequels and such, it seems like these authors should be grateful fans care enough to want to spend all that time and effort making fan works. And even if it's an issue of the author maybe not wanting people sullying her personal views on her own characters' personalities, it's not like the author is expected to read fanfic. Even if I dont write about their series, I'm still entitled to think whatever I want about them. And if I write and post my thoughts on what I think Seregil and Alec's first time would be like, no one could complain (i've got freedom of speech, yo.) so how is it different if I demonstrate my thoughts through a hypothetical story? Do many Japanese authors have problems with fanfiction, too, and I just don't hear about it because I'm in America? Soli and I joke that Anne Rice is just worried someone would write fanfic better than her original stuff, haha.
o well. all this is just my disappointment at not being able to find NC17 Seregil x Alec fics to satisfy me. >:O
