One Man's Faith

A knock came at a man's door one late afternoon. Answering the door, the man found a sheriff's deputy on his doorstep who said, "Sir, the dam upriver has broken and in the possible event of the levee breaking, we are evacuating the area. If you'd kindly gather your important belongings and proceed to a safer location." Undaunted by the news, the man replied, "Fear not for me, Deputy, for God cares for his children."

When the water began lapping at his windowsills, a sheriff's boat came by when they saw the man wading across his living room. The deputy managed to get the man's attention with a bullhorn and said, "Sir, the levee has broken and the flooding will only get worse. You should gather what necessities you need and we'll take you to a safe location." The man, buttressed with his faith, called out, "Don't worry about me, Deputy. God will look after me."

As the water crested the eaves of his house, a sheriff's helicopter saw the man sitting atop his roof. Loudly, the sheriff's deputy's voice called over the drumbeat of the helicopters rotors, "Sir! Grab the ladder we will lower to you! We will take you to a safe location!" Unswerving in his belief and waving the helicopter off, the man yelled, "I am not afraid, Deputy! God will protect me from harm!"

When the man found himself standing at the Pearly Gates, he asked, "God, why didn't you save me?" In a booming voice, God replied, "I sent you a sheriff's deputy, a boat, and a helicopter. What more did you want?"

(Sadly, stories like this are no joke (web link). Faith should not equal stupidity.)
