Memoir project

I'm taking a course next month on life writing, and there's a suggested reading list. I've tracked down all the books in some way (yes, I am such a Hermione), and I have another pile of memoirs, and am working my way through them.

I read a great memoir called "Loose Girl; A memoir of Promiscuity" by Kerry Cohan that is really great. I definitely recommend it :)

a non-traditional work you might be interested in:

American-Born Chinese
a graphic novel, and not an autobiography, but the incorporation of the stories here is an interesting technique one could use for life writing:
Indie graphic novelist Gene Yang's intelligent and emotionally challenging American Born Chinese is made up of three individual plotlines: the determined efforts of the Chinese folk hero Monkey King to shed his humble roots and be revered as a god; the struggles faced by Jin Wang, a lonely Asian American middle school student who would do anything to fit in with his white classmates; and the sitcom plight of Danny, an All-American teen so shamed by his Chinese cousin Chin-Kee (a purposefully painful ethnic stereotype) that he is forced to change schools.

That sounds REALLY cool. I wonder if my library can get it through document delivery. I'll try to order it. Thanks!

On Gold Mountain is a very interesting read on this one woman's family history.

Thanks! I have a long list of books to read now (as you can see), but it's good to know what people like just in case I stumble across it! I think I'll be going to a lot of second-hand bookstores in the near future.
