In the spirit of gearing up for NaNo and thinking about what and how I want to write, I'd like you all to recommend your favourite autobiographies/personal memoirs. Then tackle any or all or these questions:
  • In what way has this memoir touched you?
  • Was it the writing or the subject that moved you, or both?
  • What creative approach did the author invoke ( Read more... )

I don't know if you'd classify them as memoirs or autobiographies, but I love David Sedaris's books. Me Talk Pretty One Day and Naked are both mostly stories about his childhood and crazy family. MTPOD is sort of a send-up of inspirational stories, and Naked is more of a send-up of the "I came from nothing" type of memoir. Both are hysterical, rolling-on-the-floor funny.

I think he's the guy two of the three American friends I visited this summer raved to me about! I don't think I can be that funny, but I will check them out. Thanks!

Wil Wheaton's Just A Geek. It was the writing that I liked... He's not as polished as he could be, but he's got a wit and charm and a very personal way of writing that I enjoy. It's really just a selection of blog entries, edited and occasionally annotated, so it's got a kind of weird (but fun) structure to it.

You might want to read his blog for a bit first to see if you like his writing style.

Andre Makine's "Dreams of My Russian Summers" always comes to mind as one of my favorities, but it's been so long since I've read it. I found it enchanting.

Yes, David Sedaris is the one we raved about. I love anything by him. Remember "Six to Eight Black Men"?

I definitely remember that! Is he better on audiotape or in book form?

I'll check out that book. Thanks!

Hey! I was just going through old posts and found this. Dreams of my Russian Summers was on my 'life writing' reading list this summer, and I'm halfway through it. I also find it enchanting!
