The firefly is capable of producing a "cold light", containing no ultra violet rays, due to a chemical reaction that occurs in specialized light-emitting organs.
This capability is called bioluminescence. It's primary function in adult fireflies is for finding a mate. Usually the ones flying around are males.

i never understood why people liked to catch them in jars. i always thought it was more fun to watch them fly around and do what they do naturally.

Oh for real, it's so sad when they're in jars.
One night I was out by this stream, and the banks/water were glowing and reflecting like crazy with TONS of them all around- it was lovely. Sweet little bugs.

We didnt have them in South Africa when i was growing up, so the first time i ever saw one (I had heard of them before, but didn't know what to expect), i was around 15 or so. They seemed so magical! :)
