Heart To Heart
“Uh, mom? Can we talk?”
No matter what, a distinct ripple began at the base of Yuri’s spine and worked it’s way up when she heard that specific tone coming from one of her children. It didn’t matter if it were a son or a daughter, whenever she heard them speaking in that tentative way, her reaction was akin to her fur ruffling if she had been an actual wolf.
Slowly, the matriarch of the Fujimori clan turned around to see her youngest son, Tatsuya, shifting uneasily from foot to foot, rubbing at the back of his nape self consciously. It was a mannerism that all her boys had, something they inherited from their father, which meant that whatever it was Tatsu wanted to speak about, it was decidedly uncomfortable and quite a bit serious.
She sighed and patted at the counter she was behind. “Come here and sit down. I can already tell this calls for some hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies.”
Tatsuya relaxed a little and sat on a stool on the other side of the kitchen counter. “You could tell that easily, huh?”
“When my son starts a conversation with “can we talk?” then I know it’s pretty serious,” Yuri stated, filling up two cups with the steaming hot drink and then setting a plate of cookies in front of her son before moving around to sit next to him. “And if he’s coming to me then it’s something he can’t ask his father about.”
“Come on, Mom…you know Dad. If I asked him about it it’d just end up a bunch of awkward silences and dancing around the subject till he pats me on the shoulder and goes “Good talk son,” and then takes off.”
She chuckled. “Yes. That sounds like Jiro all right. Discussion has never been his strong point…” she took a sip of her cocoa before eyeing Tatsuya seriously. “So what’s this about?”
He immediately blushed, and she pretty much had the answer in front of her.
A slow smile spread over Yuri’s lovely features. “It’s about Mio, huh?”
The blush deepened and he ducked his head. “I’m that obvious?”
“Of all my sons you’re the most like an open book,” she ruffled his short hair affectionately. “What’s going on? You’re happy with her, aren’t you?”
Immediately Tatsuya’s head shot up. “Of course I am! She’s the only…the only woman I could ever want to be with, that’s what makes this so…difficult to talk about.”
Yuri watched her son fidget with the fang necklace and bite at his lower lip. “Tatsuya…what’s really bothering you, sweetheart?”
He looked directly into his mother’s eyes, and seeing the concerned, tender look on her features made him realize exactly why his father loved her so much. “When you and Dad…first…mated.” He paused, blushing a deeper crimson. “That was your first time, right?”
Now Yuri blushed a little at the memory, but she also smiled fondly. “Yes. It was.”
“Just how badly…I can’t believe I’m asking this…how badly did it hurt?”
It clicked completely at that moment. “You want to take the next step with Mio by fully making her your mate but you’re worried about how much you’ll hurt her.”
He blinked at his mother’s astuteness. “Yes. That’s it exactly.”
She sighed. “Drink more of your cocoa…I need to figure out how to word this…”
He chuckled and took a sip. “At least your solution isn’t to show me a National Geographic special on the behavioral aspects of wolves.”
“Your father is still paying for that stunt…it took months to re-toliet train Takeshi after he found out that “marking his territory” was a whole lot easier.”
“…You don’t happen to have any pictures of that time lying around do you?”
“ I’m not helping you blackmail your brother, no matter how much of a hard time he gives you,” she sighed heavily before returning to the subject at hand. “Okay let’s focus on the important things here: You love Mio.”
Tatsuya nodded.
“Mio loves you.”
He nodded again.
“You’re ready to mate…but you’re not sure that she is.”
“Yes.”
“All right…” she sighed again. “The best advice I can give here is: talk to her. Let her know what’s on your mind and discuss the situation.”
“Is that what you and Dad did?”
Yuri laughed sharply. “Your father…was never one for words. But…with him, when it happened, it was the right moment for both of us. And I’ve never looked back since I became his,” the look on her face grew wistful. “He gave me a life and love and wonderful children, all of whom have grown a little too quickly before my eyes,” again, she ruffled Tatsuya’s hair. “I can’t believe you’re already at the age where you want to take a mate.”
“I want a life of my own with Mio,” he admitted. “But that doesn’t mean I’ll ever stop thinking of you and dad and my brothers and sisters as my real home.”
She smiled sadly. “That’s what your pack is, dearest…” she leaned up and kissed his forehead sweetly. “Talk to Mio…and when you’re both ready, make it special.”
He nodded. “Right. I should have thought of that myself.”
Yuri chuckled. “That’s why you come to me…now, I know that my youngest wouldn’t be thinking these things if one of his brothers hadn’t brought up the subject,” she crossed her arms and fixed him with a look that made him gulp and shrink back a little. His mother could be downright formidable and he knew that was another reason his father adored her so much. “Who was bugging you?”
“Take a wild guess.”
She pinched the bridge of her nose. “Ta-ke-shiiiiii….”
Tatsuya inched away as she began to grumble to herself. “Good talk Mom. Good talk…” and then he took off running in a manner similar to his father, leaving Yuri to plot one of her other son’s downfall in his wake.
