The Cutting Edge

It had been Chiaki’s idea, though that wasn’t really a surprise. Whenever it came to anything involving having fun, Chiaki would inevitably be at the center of it.

There had been a surprising lull in Gedoshu activity recently, and Chiaki had taken advantage of that almost immediately by suggesting that the entire Shinkenger team go up to the snow and enjoy the winter properly.

What had been most surprising was how quickly Takeru had agreed and even said that it sounded like fun. It had been amusing to see how everyone else’s (even Genta’s) eyes had widened at their Lord’s response.

So Chiaki had thrown himself into planning their trip, and Mako had lost count of the amount of times she’d passed by his room and found him huddled over travel planning guides.

It was rather cute, actually, but Mako wasn’t about to give Chiaki the satisfaction of knowing that.

So she just went along with her business, looking forward to a vacation like everyone else.

Of course, nothing ever went like planned in that household.

It had ended up being just Chiaki, Mako, Kotoha and Genta. Takeru had caught a cold, and though he had insisted that everyone else go and have a good time, Ryuunosuke had stayed behind just in case anything happened while everyone else was away. (Though Mako suspected the real reason was so he could take care of Takeru. Ryuunosuke was nothing if not perpetually protective of their leader)

It made things just a little bit awkward, to say the least. Kotoha and Genta had been growing closer and closer, and while she thought their budding romance was incredibly sweet, it made her long for one of her own.

She’d been initially attracted to Ryuunosuke, but she was fairly aware now that his heart belonged to someone else: someone who wasn’t female. She hoped one day he’d just come clean about his feelings to Takeru not only for his sake, but for everyone else’s. Ryuunosuke’s feelings were as clear as daylight to everyone but Takeru and if he didn’t stop beating around the bush soon…well Mako was going to lock those two in a room until he did.

She sighed wistfully as she watched Kotoha and Genta skate across the pond, eyes locked with one another and off in their own little world.

One day…she’d find someone to share that kind of moment with. Until then…

Mako was jolted out of her reverie by Chiaki’s bright laughter, and she looked over to find him skating out across the pond, towards where she was sitting and watching instead of joining in herself.

“Nee-san!!!” he waved happily, a huge, playful grin on his boyish face.

She couldn’t help the smile that crossed her face in return. Chiaki was a bundle of energy, and it was infectious. She wasn’t sure where he got it from, but it made him a lot of fun to be around, and put her into a good mood despite her lamenting over her lack of romantic prospects.

Skidding to a stop close to her, Chiaki held out his hands in invitation. “Come on…you’re not going to sit there all day are you?”

“It’s actually quite nice just sitting here and watching you guys have fun,” she admitted.

He arched an eyebrow. “It’s not true fun until everyone’s involved.”

“You don’t have to worry about me, I’m-” she began, but was cut off when he took it upon himself to kneel down and start exchanging her boots for ice-skates. “W-What are you doing?” she stumbled, uncharacteristically, not used to the lively Chiaki showing such a side.

“If you think I’m just going to let you sit here and stare off into space, you’ve got another thing coming,” he chuckled as he laced up the skates.

She groaned. “Chiaki…really it’s not…”

He placed a gloved hand over her mouth to silence her. “Mako…you’re going to skate.”

There was a surprising intensity in his eyes that made her heart actually skip a beat, and she grew silent.

He smiled softly and returned to lacing up the skates. “I refuse to let you sit here and mope over Ryuunosuke for another minute.”

“I wasn’t moping over…wait a minute, how did you know that?”

“It’s been written all over your face,” he shrugged.

“Well I wasn’t moping,” she continued, flushing a bit when he stuck his tongue out of the corner of his mouth as he concentrated, the action adorable to her. “I was just…”

“Daydreaming?” he shot her a look. “Look, no offense but I don’t see you with a guy like Ryuunosuke. He’s too…high strung. You need someone laid-back…but would keep you on your toes. Someone who you’d have a lot of fun with.”

She smirked. “Someone like you, you mean?”

Chiaki actually flushed and grew silent.

Mako giggled. “Wow, that’s a first. Chiaki embarrassed.”

He rubbed at his hair self-consciously. “It’s not like that, I just meant…you need more of a man, that’s all.” Finally finished with the skates, he rose to his feet and held out his hand for hers. “Now come on.”

Now it was Mako who flushed. “I um…I don’t exactly know how,”

A warm grin crossed his features, making him appear more handsome than she expected. “Then I’ll teach you. It’s easy…you trust me right?”

Heart fluttering, Mako nodded and slowly took his hand, allowing him to pull her up and lead her onto the ice.

Instantly, she slipped, but Chiaki caught her quickly and held her up. “Whoa! Careful…” he chuckled, helping her remain upright. “You really are a beginner…”

She blushed an interesting shade of pink, about the same color as her uniform when she was in Shinkenger mode. “I told you I didn’t know how.”

“Don’t sweat it,” he shook his head, moving around so he could skate backwards and hold both her hands. “Let’s just start slow…”

The entire time that he taught her, he never once let go, remaining as her anchor in case she felt like she was going to fall. It warmed her heart more and more as she grew more confident, and before she realized it, she was able to skate on her own.

By this point, Chiaki was watching her with pride on his face. “You’re doing it!”

She laughed brightly, the sound reminding him of bells. “You’re right. Once you know what you’re doing, this is a lot of fun!”

“I told you,” he grinned.

Grinning back, she skated over to him and surprised him by taking his hand. “I like it a little more when you’re holding onto me though…” she murmured, a pretty blush accenting her lovely features.

His breath caught in his throat and for once, he wasn’t sure what to say, and then she floored him more by leaning up and placing a sweet kiss on his cheek. “Thank you for teaching me,” she whispered, pulling back slowly.

It allowed him the opportunity and, in much more typical Chiaki-action, without really thinking, he leaned in and dropped a quick kiss on her lips. “You’re welcome,” he murmured, his eyes meeting hers.

Her heart had started pounding from that impulsive action and she stumbled, about to fall backwards, but he caught her before she did, his arms wrapping tightly around her, as they were suddenly only inches away from each other.

Mako’s arms wrapped around Chiaki’s shoulders as he carefully brought her upright, and she didn’t let go once she regained her footing, instead sliding closer.

Brushing her hair back over her shoulder, an unusually serious, romantic look gracing his face, Chiaki decided to take another chance and leaned in again, this time kissing her more deeply.

To his delight, her arms draped around his neck and she pressed closer, moaning slightly as the embrace grew more passionate and then threading her fingers through his hair to keep him close.

He pulled back for air, panting softly and staring at her in wonder.

Slowly, Mako smiled. “You know you could have just said that you liked me…”

A low chuckle escaped him. “Yeah but where’s the fun in that?”

Shaking her head, laughing, Mako just pulled him back for another kiss, which he gave eagerly.

They were quickly caught up in each other, and almost didn’t hear an amused “ahem.”

Slowly, they looked over to see Genta actually smirking as he held Kotoha close in his arms. “Careful you don’t melt the ice, you two.”

Kotoha just waved with an embarrassed expression.

“ I’m just surprised it hasn’t cracked under your weight,” Chiaki retorted, a smirk of his own crossing his face.

The two boys fell into an easy repertoire of insults and jabs at one another, Genta eventually lunging for Chiaki, but the spear-user darted out of the way and this resulted in him being chased across the ice by a raging sushi-chef.

Watching the antics, Mako sighed and rolled her eyes. “Boys…”

Kotoha just giggled softly. “Think of it this way: it’ll be more fun when we double date.”
