Two To Tango
He wasn’t used to receiving calls at 5 in the morning, particularly when they came from the Princess of Venus, who had gone through a period of not talking to him at all after the world had been made over.
The Shitennou and the Sailor Senshi had all retained their memories of what happened before, when the Four Kings had been under the influence of Queen Metaria and Beryl. When he looked back on it…he could understand why Minako was angry. Somehow their past memories and life together did little to ease the sting of his betrayal, that’s why, when he reached for the cell-phone that had been issued to all of the Kings upon being reunited, he was quite surprised to see that she was the one calling.
Groggily, he answered the incessantly ringing device. “Venus?”
“ I need you.”
He blinked in complete shock. “Excuse me?”
“I need you to meet with me,” she clarified. “It’s an emergency, all right? So get your fine ass out of bed and over to this address!”
“…Did you just say my ass is fine?” soft lips curled into an amused smile.
“ZOI! FOCUS!!!!”
“You’ve been hanging around Mars too much; I can tell how much she’s rubbed off on you.”
“Zoi…” her voice took on a new edge of frustration. “I wouldn’t call you if it weren’t incredibly important so please…just write down this address and come? Please?”
“When will you learn that I can never refuse you?” his voice changed as well, becoming more serious. Their past life meant a lot to him, and he knew it meant a lot to her as well otherwise she wouldn’t have been as upset as she had.
“…And when will you learn that no matter how angry you make me, I’ll always call for you?” her voice turned just as serious.
“Mina…”
“Please Zoi, we can talk when you get here. Right now…just get here.”
Sighing, he nodded even though she couldn’t see him. “All right. Give me 15 minutes and I’ll be there.”
“Let me guess…you need the time to style your hair?”
“Shut up.”
He hung up the phone with a roll of his eyes at her giggling on the opposite end, but he allowed himself a chuckle before finally rising from his bed and setting about getting ready.
He reached the theatre she had directed him to exactly 15 minutes later, dressed nicely in black slacks and a white shirt, his silver hair pulled back into it’s usual ponytail.
He glanced up at the building, then back at the address to make certain he hadn’t made a mistake, before entering.
He spotted Minako’s familiar, feminine form sitting on the stage. Her pretty face was titled downwards as she read something on a sheet of paper that was in her hands.
Sticking his hands in his pockets as he neared her, Zoisite spoke. “All right, I’m here. What’s the big…” he paused when he saw the sea of papers that were surrounding the Sailor Senshi when he was close enough. “…Emergency?” he finished, staring in disbelief.
Minako Aino looked up from her research and gestured for Zoisite to join her on the stage. “Come here.”
“What in the…Mina what is all of this?” he climbed up onto the stage in an elegant movement, glad he wasn’t wearing his Guardian outfit because then the cape might have caught on something. He gestured at the mountains of paper that were all over the stage floor.
She rose to her feet and offered him a wide smile. “Dance lessons.”
Zoisite found that he was blinking rapidly a lot these days. “Dance lessons?”
“…well. Kind of. I’m trying to teach myself,” she explained.
“Why not hire an instructor?”
“I’ve been around enough choreographers to know that it doesn’t always work out how you plan, and since this is for Usagi and Mamoru’s wedding…”
“Ah!” now he understood.
Minako now smirked. “What; did you think I dragged you out of bed and to a deserted building for a tryst?”
“I was hoping,” he replied, his tone teasing. They had flirted like this plenty of times in the past; it felt nice to do it again…familiar.
Minako rolled her eyes. “Anyway…I’m trying to learn all these different traditional dances for the ball and…I need a partner who won’t step on my toes or simply grunt in response to my request.”
“So you asked Kunzite before me then?”
Minako just nodded.
“…well if we’re going to do this, we’re going to have to clean up the floor first.”
His response was a blinding smile from Sailor Venus, which made his heart flutter in a way it hadn’t in a long, long time, and he gave her a smile in return before they set about cleaning up the space.
They started with what they remembered best: the waltz. Minako was grateful for Zoisite’s musically trained ear, which allowed them to glide into a rhythm easily. The romantic, sweeping dance carried them both away to a time past, and they soon became lost in each other’s eyes, Minako reflecting that it felt like being home in his arms.
“I’m sorry I got so mad,” she murmured, breaking a silence that had lingered between them since they started to dance. “It’s…difficult, when you remember two different lives and now you’ve got a chance to start over.”
He leaned a little closer. “I know how you feel, Minako…but I’m glad we’ve at least got that chance.”
Heart skipping a beat at his proximity, she nodded. “Me too.”
His handsome face broke into a sweet smile. “How about something different next?” he pulled away from her and studied some of the dance steps she had printed out, his grin widening as an idea: brilliant and just a bit wicked, came to him. “You know, I’ve always wanted to try…” he switched the music they were playing and a sultry, Latin beat began to play over the speakers. “The Tango.”
The look her gave her sent pleasant shivers up her spine and she took his outstretched hand wordlessly, allowing him to pull her effortlessly into the dance.
It encouraged their bodies to move as close as possible, Minako’s hands fisting in his shirt when he dipped her suddenly, elegant fingers trailing up her bare leg and making her breath hitch in her throat.
The dance picked up in speed, the two of them losing awareness of their surroundings, focused on each other and the heat that erupted as they moved together: twisting and turning and grasping at one another, faces coming oh-so-close and lips nearly brushing. The intimacy between them spiked further, Minako tugging at the tie that kept Zoisite’s hair back until it fell loose in silver strands around his shoulders.
He dipped her one final time, his lips grazing over her swan-like neck, slowly guiding her back to her feet.
Her legs felt like they were made of Jell-O by this point, her grip on his shoulders tight as they never broke eye contact.
They were both panting from exertion, unable to let go of one another just yet.
Swallowing hard, Zoisite reached out and brushed her bangs away from her forehead, his fingers sliding lightly over her cheek, down across her neck, her collarbone.
She murmured his name, and then there were no more words when he finally claimed her mouth with his, the two of them kissing with an intensity due to feelings that had been building for far too long.
Her fingers snaked into his long hair, yanking him closer, while his arms wrapped securely around her waist, lifting her against him as he punctuated his attentions with tender bites to her mouth, tracing there with his tongue and begging entrance which she gladly gave.
As the kiss deepened further, they both couldn’t help the relief they felt as well as their desire. All of that dancing around each other had to stop at some point, and ironically, it was the two of them actually dancing that had brought their feelings completely into the open.
Slowly, Zoisite pulled away, breathing heavily and staring at the beautiful woman in his arms. “I…”
“Am so glad you finally just did that,” she finished, smiling.
Chuckling, Zoisite touched his forehead to hers, blue eyes boring into dark brown. “So am I…” and he leaned in for another kiss, more romantic this time, Minako moaning quietly into it as they once again lost themselves.
And then…there was an amused “ahem” and the lovers slowly pulled away.
Looking over, they saw a smirking Usagi Tsukino standing at the base of the stage, her fiancée Mamoru Chiba at her side, who also looked very amused. Usagi held up her cell phone and waved it around. “I’ve been trying to reach you all morning but obviously, you’ve been quite busy.”
Minako exchanged a look with Zoisite, who had yet to unwrap his arms from around her. “Er…”
Mamoru chuckled. “I was wondering where you’d run off to Zoi…”
Zoisite and Minako just looked at each other again before they finally pulled away, the Sailor Senshi of Venus blushing furiously as she rubbed self-consciously at her hair. “That was…uh…we…” she began, lamely trying to find the right words.
“We were dancing,” Zoisite interjected.
“Must have been some dance,” Mamoru muttered under his breath, causing Usagi to elbow him.
“ Sorry to interrupt you two but, I’m getting the girls to try on their bridesmaids dresses today…” Usagi explained. “So unfortunately I need Minako.”
“Oh god…” the older of the two women climbed down from the stage with Zoisite’s assistance. “Please don’t stuff me in something pink and with hideous ruffles…”
Usagi glared. “Give me some credit Mina…it might be pink but ruffles are ridiculous. Better to go with glitter.”
Minako gave Zoisite a look that clearly said “Save me.”
He just gave her a sympathetic glance, noticing how iron Usagi’s grip was becoming and there’d be no way he’d be able to pry her away.
“You can come if you want,” Usagi’s attention suddenly focused on him now, and she gave him a cheerful smile. “You can look at Minako in pretty dresses.”
“Usagi!”
Mamoru clamped a hand on Zoisite’s shoulder. “Think of it as keeping me company if nothing else. Trust me…I’ll need someone to let me know if my eyes are glazing over cause she tends to get upset if I don’t respond properly,” he whispered, gesturing at his future wife.
“And then afterwards, we can all get some lunch. It’ll be fun! A double date! And you can totally get me back when you guys plan your wedding!” Usagi was babbling, already dragging a reluctant Minako off.
Zoisite froze. “W-wedding?”
Mamoru just shook his head. “She gets ahead of herself…”
“True…” he should have been used to Usagi after all this time.
Suddenly, Minako came back over to him and grabbed his hand. “If I have to suffer, so should you,” she grumbled, dragging him with her as they began to exit the theatre.
Zoisite just chuckled. “What kind of boyfriend would I be if I didn’t appeal to your wishes?”
She blushed. “Boyfriend?”
“Only if you want.”
Looking up at him, she smiled and leaned her head on his shoulder. “I want you. Does that work?”
Smiling fondly, he kissed her forehead sweetly. “ Yes...yes it does.”
And they clasped hands as they followed a vibrant Usagi and her highly amused fiancé, not really thinking about the future, instead focusing on taking each day at a time, as long as it was together.
The End
