The Little Mermaid is really not appropriate brain-fodder when plunked into one's OTP. I should not be drawing Shisui as Prince Eric and Itachi as some sort of Ariel substitute poking him washed up on the beach x_x;
Is this okay? (the appropriate response, fyi guys, is No, no it is not. it is not okay.)
On another note, I tried more CG, and learned something I probably should have already known: don't fucking try to CG pencil sketches. Make sure you have inked it first, moron. >_>;; It will make you want to rip your hair out.
Anyway. I have a problem with ninjas. Have a drabble:
Title: While Wandering
Rating: G.
Pairing: Gen, ft. Itachi, Kisame
Length: 771
Summary: Itachi's thoughts when he returns to Konoha.
The wind rushing behind Kisame and Itachi when they pause over the village sends the paper in their hats fluttering wildly. Dust is kicking up all across Konoha in the wake of the Chuunin exams, the remains of battle. Shinobi are still jumping from rooftop to rooftop intermittently, glancing around furtively. He knows this feeling: no one is quite sure the battle is over and the adrenaline still there. They are not quite ready to relax yet though they know they should. Everyone is still battle-honed, senses sharpened to knife-points.
It is, in short, the worst possible time for members of an organization trying to stay secret to appear in a hidden village.
"Such a shame. It used to be such a prosperous village," Itachi says, feeling the lie on his lips. Konoha will prevail; it always has. It is still very much intact after Orochimaru's attack, he knows it is. True destruction was the one Itachi orchestrated himself. That was a day for mourning. The day everything halted with a sickening crunch. This is just a tiny hitch in the greater movement.
He pauses again. He hasn't been back since. His heart clenches at the vista in front of him and he knows the expression on his face is one of regret, something too sad and subtle to place. So he's glad Kisame probably can't see it, hidden by his hat and high collar.
Traveling with someone, you get to know all the little things that define them. Kisame knows intellectually that Itachi is heartless mass-murderer, but Itachi is unerringly polite, gracious. He will make tea if asked, will give directions to travelers lost on the road with precise detail. He will clean things with patience and ask concernedly if someone is all right if they cough, if they're sick. He helps children and old people, is never rude to simple farmers and villagers. Itachi wonders if his partner struggles to reconcile these things, knowing that Kisame's own background will blind him from giving the Itachi he travels with greater weight. It's the murder that's alluring, the bloodstains that will stick in his memory.
Itachi has a few purposes here besides twisting his own insides. That's just a bonus. He heard that the Sandaime is dead, and just like that, he has convinced Akatsuki that it's time to investigate how difficult it will be to extract the Kyuubi's host. It is easy since Madara has made himself so thoroughly scarce these past few years. They note that the village is on high alert. Itachi assures them they will be subtle; it is only reconnaissance, though in fact he aims to get noticed by as many Konoha shinobi as he can. Jiraiya, Kakashi if possible. Definitely Danzo. Kakashi will be made more aware of Akatsuki and it's goals, as he suspects only Jiraiya knows anything besides the bare bones of their existence at this point. He doesn't want to capture Naruto. He's glad Sasuke has friends if he allows himself to.
Danzo... well, the man needs to be reminded how much Itachi hates him, of what will happen if he touches Sasuke.
After today their red-and-black cloaks will not just point to odd wandering nin, but be instantly recognizable. He doesn't hope to see his younger brother, but it still beats there, fluttering against his chest, even though he wills it not to. Sasuke. Sasuke grown up after having just taken his chuunin exams. Sasuke is alive, most importantly of all.
Some of his plans have succeeded very well. In fact, every one has, every plan he makes in poor compensation of the life he's already given up. They are consolation prizes, so he feels like he deserves for them to go his way. The most important is Danzo.
He has no doubt they will fail rather spectacularly at their reconnaissance; they don't need to succeed, anyway- Itachi already knows all about Naruto and the Kyuubi, of the way Konoha shinobi are going to protect him. He could have told Akatsuki that without setting foot in the village. Konoha will never appreciate this tiny gift, but that's not the point. Recognition is the least thing on his mind. Ever since that day in the Nakano, the cold reality is all he's concerned with. Dead or alive, black and white, the harsh stumbling expanse of the world. The space between choices. Doors closing. These are the terrible things; the ones he can't erase. All he can do is make sure the one last thing he cares about stays firmly in the alive category.
Kisame shifts impatiently. "Should we go?"
"Yes," Itachi replies.

Also, I have a stupid question. This is ridiculous, but I need aid. Somebody, anybody. Currently my journal uses some sort of style sheet that makes lj-cuts retain the look/style of my journal. In other words, I want cuts to go to the "normal" comments screen. (i like everything else about the style sheet.) I have html-stupid. Does anyone know what section of code would make it go to the normal lj-comments screen?
EDIT: problem solved, thank you
