[drabble] from a guidebook for the newly dead; a tiny missing scene.

Shisui: A Guidebook for the Newly Dead is over at bitter_nakano but today I decided to write a missing scene that's always been in my head, but it didn't want to fit with the ending. Switches to Itachi's pov.
Rating: PG-13 SHAMELESS FLUFF. you make choke.
Pairing: Itachi/Shisui
Length: 719

SOMETIME BETWEEN getting out of the river and finally making it to the level ground of the Uchiha compound, Shisui loses all his energy. Itachi pulls him against his own body, wrapping his other arm around Shisui's waist, but he's still dragging dead weight. Shisui's eyes have fallen shut and his breathing is frighteningly shallow. Itachi gives up and picks his cousin bodily up. They have to get inside. The winds have died down but it's still frigidly cold, and they are soaked. Shisui has enough sense left to wrap his arms feebly around Itachi's neck, clutching at the fabric.

They make it to the house, somehow, and Itachi deposits Shisui on the tatami mats, where he immediately curls up, teeth chattering, lips blue. He's still trying to cough up the entire Nakano, chest spasming as he heaves. Itachi strides across the room and pulls the bed into order as quickly as he can. Then he goes back to Shisui, who reaches for him perhaps in delirium, running his hand along Itachi's arm.
Itachi pulls off the soaking clothes, and Shisui has the nerve to give him lip about it. "kinda... quick... to be tearing my clothes off, Itachi..." but he doesn't protest much. He is barely breathing now, and what breath there is sounds horribly pained. Itachi carries him into the bed, and pulls all the covers up. This is all my fault.

Even Itachi, who is not a medi-nin, knows this isn't looking good. He knows that if you swallow too much water, or your airways close up from the stress, you can still drown after the fact. They call it drowning on dry land. Or if you've damaged your lungs too much by swallowing water, you still die. Just later on, and painfully so. Does he call someone? How to explain why Shisui would have gone out in such a storm, why he has bruises on his neck and a twisted arm?

And then there is a shriek and a thump from somewhere else in the house. Sasuke is at home with his legion of brats. Itachi pulls open the sliding door and comes face to face with children. A boy with blond hair and one with pink, eyes round as saucers. Their eyes dart between "cousin Shisui" laying in bed, still coughing intermittently only with less and less strength, and Itachi in wet clothes looking stressed.

"What's wrong with-" Sasuke starts rudely before he is elbowed aside by Sakura. "MOVE!" she shrieks and darts into the room. She pauses before Shisui, her eyes comically wide, studying him. Itachi marvels at how children sometimes understand crises with all the gravity of adults. "He's got..." she whispers, and glances over at Itachi for permission.

Itachi nods at whatever she's trying. Sakura places her hands gently over Shisui's bare chest and squeezes her eyes shut. For a minute, nothing seems to be happening, but Itachi invokes the Sharingan and looks. The faintest beginning of healing chakra, not even visible above her hands, but flowing below them, into Shisui's lungs. Gentle, untrained, and barely there, but it brings him back from the edge. His breathing is calmer, less pained. Itachi places his hand over her shoulder and smiles. She looks up, pleased, smiling sweetly. "...my mom taught me," she whispers. Shisui's hand shoots out- it may have been an accident- and lands on top of hers.

"Thank you..." he murmurs, charming even now. Sakura blushes the brightest red Itachi has ever seen.
Itachi then gently shoos them out, Naruto and Sasuke looking like they are about to burst into loud questions as soon as they are out of the room, Sakura looking quite pleased with herself. Itachi shuts the door.

Now there is just the cold problem. He peels the wet clothes off himself, and climbs in next to Shisui, who turns to him even semi-conscious and tucks his head into Itachi's neck. Itachi wraps around Shisui's cold body, skin to skin, letting body heat build between them. It only takes moments. He smooths his hand in circles over Shisui's back, around and around. Shisui breathes into his neck, finally taking in deep slow breaths, coming back together a little bit. Shisui mumbles something Itachi cannot catch, and then he is asleep, deeply exhausted. Itachi waits, making sure Shisui is safe, then snuffs the candle and lets himself drift off as well.

brought you by fun facts about drowning. ._. i looked up facts because i'm lame, and discovered dry drowning, which is a real and kinda terrifying thing, and realized that Shisui probably should have died from what I wrote happened >_> but mostly this is an excuse to get their clothes off. :p

drabble, itachi/shisui
