trance, bitches, and a swede

My upstairs neighbors had a party last night for a friend who was heading to Seoul to teach English, and surprisingly i had a really good time. One of the guys who lives upstairs, sean, just happens to be into trance, and put on a live show of DJ Tiesto on his impressively loud music system. Soon enough, bowls were smoked, and dancing ensued! It was fantastic to find myself in the company of people who didn't care they were listening to techno, and just danced because the music was body-movin'. That was the best part of the night (and it was a good hour or so).

A large fraction of the people there were from this town Braintree south of Boston, the rest from around the world. Across the street from our house is an English language institute, so there are tons of wealthy non-Americans who've come to Boston to check out life in America, and party. Anyways, the American women at the party (with one exception), were absolute bitches who gave me funny looks and frigid attitudes. The one woman i managed to have a word with (i needed a lighter), after explaining how being the downstairs neighbor got me to the party, said "oh, it's all coming together now," in her snooty boston accent. Ugh!

On the other hand, i met a dutch woman, with whom i spoke in german a little, and a proudly swedish woman, who wasn't shy to condemn hard drugs (some coke was being done, apparently) or the people who were into it. She, and her belgian boyfriend, were very critical of beers in the US (and with some good reason), one of the endearing things about her. I sensed a conflicting sentiment of resentment against and attraction to American culture, which i am intimately familiar with. She insisted on highlighting swedish achievements in any area of conversation, such as music or business. It was cute, because she assumed i was american, and finally i had to pointedly tell her i was from dubai, at which she relaxed a little. I guess prolonged contact with americans had made her defensive about her country. In summary, i got fucked up last night, the first time this has happened since i moved to beantown. A good night was had by me.
