Neurologically it's because, as phyre_brand hinted, as external stimuli reduces your brain turns inwards for something to do. Essentially, your brain gets board when you're not doing anything with it!
Physiologically it's because when you are moving about if a muscle happens to slide into an uncomfortable position it'll get moved pretty quick, when you're lying down to sleep muscles get heavy, the amount of oxygen they are getting is reduced and individual fibers start to pinch or contract.
A more useful comment might be to suggest a trick you can use. Don't try to relax! Just don't do it! Why? Because 'trying' suggests to your brain that whatever you're trying to accomplish *takes effort* - so you can see it is totally impossible to try to relax! Your brain fundamentally cannot let you do it!
So what can you do? You might have heard the story about the farmer, who wanting a pig to travel one way will attempt to pull it in the exact opposite direction, and we can do the same with the brain.
So just lie back, close your eyes if you like and try to resist the feeling of relaxation that washes over you. You might notice that your mind becomes quiet as you try to resist the calm you are feeling right now.
('try to resist' acts as an instruction to your unconscious to do whatever follows it)
That's just a simple couple of sentences I've plucked out the air, based on sound principles. The idea is sound, although I haven't taken the time to fully polish them.
Thanks! I don't think I actually focus on trying to relax as much as I am tired and want to go to sleep but my body hurts too much to.... Does that make sense? Probably not... lol But, that's some great info! :)
