Character name: Sephiroth
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII/Crisis Core
Timeline: Just after he gets to Nibelheim, and has just gone to bed.
Age: Somewhere around 24 - 26, 25 for balance's sake.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Sephiroth is regarded as the strongest SOLDIER alive (let alone his position in the SOLDIER military hierarchy is General) - that is, in layman's terms, he is the most powerful, genetically modified, alien infused, militarized being around having been trained for as long as he can remember to be the embodiment of SOLDIER.
His recorded strength is of an indeterminate value, though by all accounts in any of the games he is in, he is considered immensely powerful (and after he goes insane, only moreso). Due to this, I can only offer what I have come up with:
Sephiroth's strength includes the ability to cut through metal and stone with Masamune, also, attempting to incorporate the mechanics of the games themselves, he is capable of jumping to and from at least two stories and landing without a scratch. His stamina rating is extremely high and also leaves him at fantastic odds with many he challenges - but he is still not stronger than what he becomes while he is insane.
In the Last Order anime, which focuses primarily on Cloud Strife and Zack Fair during their escape from Professor Hojo's experiments, it is revealed that Zack is faster than bullets. I say this is because of his advanced exposure to Hojo's treatments and experiments with attempting to make him into another Sephiroth and Sephiroth himself is normally capable of these blindingly quick bursts of speed - but not over extremely long distances.
In Crisis Core, he is shown able to cut down summons in a single blow (albeit weakened beforehand), and also jump and maintain ridiculous amounts of airtime while fighting both Genesis and Angeal (who are both 1st Class SOLDIERs) in the VR training room on the 42nd floor of the Shinra Tower. The simulation of him that Zack faces in the beginning part of the game completely overwhelms the young 3rd class SOLDIER and has to be interrupted by Angeal before Zack gets his head cut open due to the power and furious intensity of all of the simulation's strikes.
His equipment and materia are as follows:
Masamune, gold armlet and touph ring; linked all+ice, all+lightning and all+earth materia with single fire, revive and restore materia. As he never is shown wearing anything else even remotely like (these items are not technically described in canon, only Masamune, a seven foot long katana he pulls out of a dimensional pocket a lot like a sheath made of Bag of Holding, is actually seen), my presumption is that these items are, in fact what he is already wearing as apart of his personally modified SOLDIER uniform. I highly doubt Sephiroth is wearing a materia studded ring, however.
On a personal level he is regarded as highly intelligent and observant, and also his ranking being what it is, it is assumed that he is good with tactics and spends an arduous amount of time doing paperwork. Like what real generals do. His strengths lie in his stamina and power, and he is better with mid-range fighting styles than he is with distance (he has his jumping and speed skills to compensate).
How would they use their abilities?:
Surprisingly, probably not often unless he is personally threatened. He is used to following orders and now he has none. Sephiroth has no reason that drives him to fight other than orders (in fact he also dimly hates how well he can fight as it puts him at odds with everyone that he seeks to be close to - that is, be human like everyone else - it's also my belief that he would fight, but for selfish reasons on the ship - ie, he starts fights or gets in on them because he has never had a challenge). He is more inclined to withdraw, and wait. He has lived and breathed Shinra and SOLDIER for so long, I imagine he'll be very confused as to what to do with himself or what his meaning or purpose in life is any more.
As he has his materia with him, I imagine he could find good uses to put it to, also potentially causing some plot point problems later.
Appearance:
Sephiroth has long, impeccable silver hair that extends to past his butt with short bangs that extend a bit just past his chin and eyes that change color according to his mood. Glowing green eyes with the slitted pupils is, in fact, not his default eye color - his default eye color is a glowing mako blue like other SOLDIERs. When he is fully insane his eyes revert to the default we all know and love - otherwise, with high emotions and no Jenova/insanity, his eyes are simply green with round pupils. All other emotional states flicker from shades of blue and grow steadily greener the more intense the emotion is. Brief shock, for example, will send a tiny flicker of green through the blue, possibly also lightening the surrounding blue color itself. The lashes around his eyes are NOT BLACK, they're silver like all the rest of the hair on his body is.
On the back of Sephiroth's left hand is a tattoo with the roman numeral for one on it specifying and running with the theme of the original FF7 game of systems and numbers (let alone, later, when Cloud is speaking to Hojo, he begs for a number so as to not be considered a failure of an experiment). The irony of this should not be lost on anyone - Sephiroth is the first, the best, has a number and is in the system. He IS the system, basically. And then Cloud comes along and destroys him - something that is an outsider and a “failure”, dismantling and proving the system is incorrect or likely inherently flawed.
Sephiroth typically wears his modified SOLDIER uniform - black (and some kind of leather) trenchcoat with multiple belts running up the front of it, thigh high hooker boots that are belted on, pants and silver pauldrons that are held in place by straps that go under his arms. Underneath the trenchcoat is the SOLDIER kidney belt that is held on as well by crisscrossing straps over his bare chest.
Background/Personality:
GLOSSARY FOR YOU:
SOLDIER: They are the elite fighting force of the Shinra Electric Company - enhanced super soldiers with super speed, strength and agility. They are the thing that finally stopped the war with Wutai and they are also infused with Mako and JENOVA cells. Each SOLDIER also has a distinct feature that Marks them: glowing blue eyes. Sephiroth is the only exception to this, canonically - his eyes are green with slitted pupils. I obviously play him with the ability to go back and forth, a physical manifestation aimed towards further emphasizing the dichotomy between his human self and his JENOVA infused self. Those who are injected with higher amounts of Jenova cells and infused with more mako are higher up on the ladder of SOLDIER hierarchy (1st class has the most of the aforementioned, then 2nd, then 3rd).
Cloud: "You see, someone in SOLDIER isn't simply exposed to Mako energy. Their bodies are actually injected with Jenova cells......"(Final Fantasy VII) Aerith: "...Your eyes. They have a strange glow..." / Cloud: "That's the sign of those who have been infused with Mako... A mark of SOLDIER."(Final Fantasy VII)
Mako: Is the liquid form of the Lifestream made manifest on the surface of the planet that can condense naturally into Materia. It is also used to make SOLDIERs and monsters while simultaneously being siphoned off into Mako Reactors (a lot like nuclear reactors or power plants) to generate electricity.
Materia: Materia is considered the physical manifestation of Mako that has been condensed and contains “the wisdom of the Ancients” within it. Basically, they're spheres that allow you to cast magic and summon giant monsters to go hunt for mommy's head.
Sephiroth: "...the knowledge and wisdom of the Ancients is held in the materia. Anyone with this knowledge can freely use the powers of the Land and the Planet. That knowledge interacts between ourselves and the planet calling up magic..... or so they say."(Final Fantasy VII)
Professor Hojo: The head of Shinra's Science Department and the father of Sephiroth (Sephiroth is unaware of this, according to Hojo, but I feel Sephiroth has his suspicions, though he is truly...disgusted by that train of thought). He is, for all intents and purposes, a mad scientist stereotype who desires nothing more than to see his son succeed and become great and better than humans - he has no tolerance for failed experiments. He is also the originator of the JENOVA project and wrongfully believes that JENOVA is an Ancient.
Professor Gast Faremis: The original head of the Science Department, he is one of the few men Sephiroth reportedly respects. He originally works on the project that uncovers JENOVA and exposes her cells to Lucrecia and her unborn son, Sephiroth. They later learn that Jenova is not an Ancient as suspected and Gast drops the project, fleeing to Icicle Inn. Sephiroth is baffled by this.
Lucrecia Crescent: Sephiroth's real birth mother who has disappeared and he knows nothing about her. She was originally one of the few who worked on the Jenova project.
The Promised Land: The Promised Land is considered to be numerous things - what it is exactly is unknown as no one in any of the canon has ever gotten there. Ancients refer to it as a land that promises supreme happiness - others claim it is a bountiful land much like the Biblical Garden of Eden so therefore filled with Mako energy to further their own ends (see: Shinra Inc).
Elder Hargo: "There is no one place called the Promised Land. That is what I believe. No no, it does exist. Hmmm... You can say that too. In other words, it doesn't exist for us, but it did for the Ancients. The Promised Land is the resting place of the Ancients. The life of the Ancients is one continuous journey. A journey to grow trees and plants, produce animals, and raise Mako energy. Their harsh journeys continued throughout their lives... The place they return to after their long journey... Their burial land is the Promised Land. Huh? Supreme happiness? I believe that, for the Ancients, it was the moment that they were able to return to their planet. At that moment, they were released from their fate, and gained their supreme happiness..."(Final Fantasy VII)
Gaia/The Planet: Where All The Things take place - it seems to be somewhat sentient as it does end up causing the Lifestream to be expelled from it in an attempt to stop Meteor from crashing at the end of the game (but this does not apply to Sephiroth, so I'm not explaining.)
Midgar: Where Shinra Tower/HQ resides, and the main power base of SOLDIER is within that same Tower. Midgar is a place of extremes, two layers of society on plates (and all are labeled by numbers while it is implied they used to have names, but no one remembers them anymore) - the upper plates where wealth and prestige reign supreme, and below them in the Slums where poverty and oppression reign.
Shinra Inc:
President Shinra:
Wutai:
Rufus Shinra:
The Turks: In a sense, they're like the Brute Squad in The Princess Bride meets the Yakuza - they do assassinations, espionage, and carry out a lot of things that SOLDIERs are not required to do. They also apparently scout for possible SOLDIER candidates. Sephiroth doesn't like them very much.
Cloud: "The Turks are an organization in Shinra. They scout for possible candidates for SOLDIER."(Final Fantasy VII)
Cetra/Ancients: Those who actually have the ability to hear the voices in the lifestream, or energy of the planet that fills all living things and continuously circulates through all, connecting everyone and every thing that is apart of that planet's ecosystem - very Buddhist in that sense, also extremely Star Wars sounding ”It binds us, surrounds us, connects us - the tree, the rock -”ahem
Aerith: "All I know is... The Cetra were born from the Planet, speak with the Planet, and unlock the Planet. And....... then...... The Cetra will return to the Promised Land. A land that promises supreme happiness."(Final Fantasy VII)
WEAPON: WEAPON, DIAMOND WEAPON, ULTIMATE WEAPON, RUBY WEAPON and EMERALD WEAPON. They are created with the intent to kill JENOVA and actually every one else on the Planet to protect them and return them to the lifestream so they would not be stolen away/corrupted by JENOVA.
Hojo: “...Weapon. Monsters created by the Planet. It appears when the Planet is in danger, reducing everything to nothingness. That's what was stated in Professor Gast's report.”(Final Fantasy VII)
JENOVA: Considering the latin background to the name (New-God), Jenova, indeed, seems to be just that. More or less usually interpreted as a replicating virus who has the ability to alter its state and form at will. Jenova is explained very little in canon except that she/it is some sort of alien force that came to the Planet and seems to be able to copy and mimic all forms of life that it encounters. In my own headcanon, Jenova, to me, sounds more like it is an old planet that has lost its way - a lifeforce that has gone astray and seeks to claim what it has lost by “stealing away” from others that it encounters. This, of course, kills the other Planets. Also, that Sephiroth so vividly thinks of it as his mother, it also seems to be ironic in that sense that Jenova is like Gaia (aka Mother Earth) and yet she is the Great Destroyer, the possible future of Gaia - hinting at those lines that Rufus Shinra in Advent Children says that history will repeat itself and has before.
Sephiroth's story starts a little unlike all the others - in fact, to really get to understand his origins, you have to go back over two thousand years to a time when, on Gaia/the Planet, a race of people known as the Cetra or the Ancients arrive, on a quest for “the Promised Land” (a legendary place that to some offers supreme happiness - what it actually is no one knows). They settle in amongst the normal human population that already lives there and begin to thrive.
Around 2000 years ago a great meteor/calamity falls from the sky and causes a massive scar to be ripped into the Planet's surface and, from it, comes a creature called JENOVA . It infiltrates the Cetra by appearing as one of them and begins to take them over, killing them off, one by one as it begins to move over the surface of the planet. Where JENOVA landed, the Lifestream begins to gather in an attempt to repair the Planet (it later becomes known as The North Cave), and this process also causes Gaia to create five hugely powerful machine like creatures of increasing power called: WEAPON, DIAMOND WEAPON, ULTIMATE WEAPON, RUBY WEAPON and EMERALD WEAPON. They are created with the intent to kill JENOVA (and actually every one else on the Planet to protect them and return them to the lifestream so they would not be stolen away) who, at this rate, has managed to wipe out most of the Cetra and many humans but they are sent into hibernation once a few of the remaining Cetra gather themselves and capture JENOVA into solid rock, thus ending its reign of terror.
Over 2000 years past, Shinra establishes itself as a force to contend with despite being a company/large corporation (think basically Walmart takes over EVERYTHING), and at some point there is a war that starts up all over the world as they seek a way to unite and control all nations under a charade of democracy.
In the last years of the war - Wutai and
Personality rambles:
Sephiroth is a man who is basically, ironically, a mass of walking complexes all on his own, and just stemming from his personal background, it's not hard to see why. Born, bred and raised to be the best, and potentially be shoved onwards to defy science and become a god, he is arrogant (but understandably so considering how powerful he is), humble, quiet, violent, sadistic, masochistic and, in many cases, simply confused underneath a hardened exterior tempered by bloodshed and training. He is, by all outward accounts, professionally distant, cold and simultaneously perfect PR material. And yet, here's the kicker - he hates it.
He is filled with hate and indecision when it comes to personal things - awkward when it comes to forming relationships and seems only capable of finding “friends” that have no qualms about using him while he uses them (albeit for different reasons). And yet, despite all this rage and lack of familiarity with the “normal” way of doing things, Sephiroth actually wants very much to be like all the other SOLDIERs - even, perhaps, be completely human (as human seems to simply equate to normal - SOLDIERs on their own are reportedly not normal. It's what, in my mind, can allow them to be a small, powerful force with the power of so many more than what they are).
"Sephiroth: Exactly. And it's Hojo of Shinra that produced these monsters. Mutated living on organisms produced by Mako energy. That's what these monster's really are./Cloud: Normal members of SOLDIER? You mean you are different? H... hey, Sephiroth!/Sephiroth: N... no... Was!? Was I created this way too?!"
"Sephiroth: The Jenova Project wanted to produce people with the powers of the Ancients... no, the Cetra. ...I am the one that was produced."
"Sephiroth: They've come again, mother. With her superior power, knowledge, and magic, Mother was destined to become the ruler of the Planet. But they… Those worthless creatures are stealing the Planet from Mother. But now I'm here with you so don't worry. / Cloud: What about MY sadness!? My family... friends... The sadness of having my hometown taken away from me!? It's the same as your sadness! / Sephiroth: Ha, ha, ha... my sadness? What do I have to be sad about? I am the chosen one. I have been chosen to be the leader of this Planet. I have orders to take this planet back from you stupid people for the Cetra. What am I supposed to be sad about?"
"Aeris: What happened to Sephiroth? / Cloud: In terms of skill, I couldn't have killed him. / Tifa: Official records state Sephiroth is dead. I read it in the newspaper. / Aeris: Shinra, Inc. owns the newspaper, so you can't rely on that information. / Cloud: ......I want to know the truth. I want to know what happened then. I challenged Sephiroth and lived. Why didn't he kill me?"
Tifa: “Five years ago... I saw the real Sephiroth for the very first time. So this is... the Great Sephiroth. But to tell you the truth, I thought he was very cold. I remember, I felt a foreboding about him.”
