Excuse me while I talk about myself

Jan 01, 2009 00:00

My friends list hasn't changed much for a while, but I am always up for meeting new and interesting people :)

Be warned. My filtered posts are not always pleasant, coherent nor intelligent. They are frequently brain dumps -- an outlet for my ramblings, occasional fangirl-ing, and other repetitive everyday things, which may or may not include school rants, work, or nightlife adventures. If I do occasionally feel artsy, I might bust out a poem or two, or even some art in Photoshop.

With that in mind, if you're still interested...  here's a little more about me. Not required reading.

NAME - I have a very uncommon name, which is quite inconvenient at times. It's pretty annoying having such an unusual name because I always have to explicitly spell it out for the baristas (when I order coffee at cafes) or hosts (when I make reservations at restaurants).  I've adopted what I call a "coffee name" for myself for these occasions - "Amy". Because my friend once said I "looked like an 'Amy'". I'm not sure why I'm telling you this; No, please don't call me Amy. The name is Charing. shur-RING. When repeated fast enough, it almost sounds like a sound effect: shring shring!

CURRENT - At the time of this writing (Jan 2009), I am a final year undergraduate student, waiting to graduate in a few months *knock on wood*. I consider myself long past the 'teenage' years of my life now, which does sadden me occasionally. I'm at a point where birthdays become less and less important, and I have to think twice when asked to give my age (not because I'm reluctant to give it, but because I need time to calculate it). Don't be mistaken however, I love being in my early 20s! :)

BACKGROUND - Born in Hong Kong, I moved to Canada when I was young. I'm fully bilingual - I can read, write and speak Chinese (Cantonese). English is still my stronger and preferred language though. Despite having lived in the western world for most of my life, I do feel cultural ties to my Hongkie roots. I continue to speak my mother tongue with my parents and older-gen relatives; I listen to a some Cantonese artists (the few good ones); I occasionally watch TVB dramas; I cook Chinese dishes; I collect red pockets during Chinese New Year (though $ amount I get seem to diminish with age D:); and I absolutely *love* visiting Hong Kong for vacation.

SCHOOL - The official papers here say I am a "software engineer", but my other major subjects of interest are mathematics and graphic design. Put simply, I love making things look pretty and I have a fascination for mathematics when it is applied to something useful, such as in the context of finance or medical imaging. Some people get the impression that I'm "smart" because (at the risk of sounding full of myself) I generally do decent in school. But I believe a lot of my academic success had to do with God's grace and...well, sheer luck - just being at the right place at the right time. No one ever believes me though, when I tell them I fluke my way through school.

CAREER - I recently accepted a job offer and will be starting as Program Manager at Microsoft working on the latest and greatest version of Windows (at the time of writing, that would be Windows 7). I did a 16-week internship with the team prior to this, and I must say, it was pretty cool working on something that was so high-profile and visible. Just imagine being part of something that a bajillion people use every day! I do look forward to this new phase of my life... in a new city... with milder weather... and lovely mountain ranges in the pacific northwest.

HOBBIES - Photography (expensive hobby T__T). Knitting. Baking. [Watching] Hockey.

RANDOM TIDBITS - I love eating, penguin, hugs & kisses, travelling, receiving mail, taking candid photos, success stories, intelligent conversations, random acts of kindness, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

JOURNAL - See profile.
