Drabbles requested by winchesterjerk for The Drabble Challenge

Title: One Last Time
Rating: G
Prompt: Endings
“So, this is it huh?”

Castiel tipped his head because Dean didn’t need him to confirm it. The old hunter was dying and this time he wouldn’t be coming back.

“It’s better than I thought I’d go, gotta tell you that Cas,” Dean said with a raspy laugh. “Not bad for me, not bad at all.”

“You’ve earned your rest.”

“See, now why did you have to ruin a perfectly good moment by saying something like that?”

Cas glanced out of the corner of his eye at his friend. Dean was scowling at him, deepening the lines on his face.

“My apologies, I still don’t seem to have a grasp of what is appropriate for this situation.”

“Told you to never change. Thanks for that.”

He shrugged. “It was the least I could do.”

Title: Wait for it...
Rating: G
Prompt: Late

Time was a funny thing to an angel. Castiel had seen centuries go by in a blink but on Earth he felt time more fully. He discovered he was rather… impatient. He didn’t like to be kept waiting. Inevitably with the Winchesters he frequently was. Now that he couldn’t instantly find them and appear, he had to wait.

Usually he only had to wait as long as it took Dean to answer his cellphone. Sometimes it took longer and the longer it did the more impatient Castiel became. He simply didn’t like waiting and by the time Dean did answer or he gave in and called Sam, he was snappish and in a poor mood. Dean used to make him wait just to annoy him. It worked.

Then one day he sat down next to Dean in a diner and huffed. “I have found something more annoying than you.”

“Well, gee, Cas, break it to me easy why don’t you?” Dean rolled his eyes. “What are you talking about?”

“Buses, Dean, are never on time.”

Title: Conversations
Rating: G
Prompt: Parents

Even though he knew it was a touchy subject with Dean, Castiel couldn’t help but wonder. He waited until Dean was away from Sam, sitting outside with the Impala and a bottle of beer in Bobby’s yard.

He stood slightly behind Dean’s right shoulder and licked his lips nervously while he looked up at the sky. “When your father let you go on your first solo hunt… did you feel abandoned?”

Dean went still, beer almost tipped back to drink. Slowly, he lowered it and shifted awkwardly. “No, man, thought… thought it meant he was proud, trusted me, you know.”

Castiel felt his chest tighten a bit but nodded. Things were always different between them, even on the same subject.

Title: In Sickness
Rating: PG
Prompt: Poison

“Did you really mean it?” Dean asked on the drive back to Bobby’s.

Castiel looked away from the window to the front seat where Dean sat driving and Sam sat sleeping. He blinked as the headlights from an oncoming car shone over them and then focused again.

“Mean what?” he asked, not quite sure what Dean was referring to. He had a feeling it was about his new humanity though. He’d rather not discuss it, but that never stopped Dean from asking before.

“About having a little bit of, you know, angel left.”

He blinked, this time without the headlights from another car, and looked back out the window. He didn’t know where he found the strength to fight Pestilence’s sickness and he’d rather not talk about it. Dean seemed to accept the silence as answer enough.

Title: In Inferno
Rating: PG
Prompt: Diligence

The fight through Hell, the race to Dean Winchester’s soul stretched for an eternity. He fought demons, fought monsters, horrors only hell could bring. Other souls clawed at him, begged him and wept asking for forgiveness, for salvation. He had to walk past them all.

Somewhere in the darkness, in the fire and the smoke he could feel Dean Winchester’s soul. It burned until it flickered and then it went out. What rose in its place was dark, angry, a terrible thing. He still pressed on. His orders were to save Dean Winchester. He would not fail, even if the thing that had once been Dean Winchester was something else entirely.

He had God’s Grace to restore.
