Just Muse Me: Countdown

May 01, 2010 08:41

“On the count of three…” the SWAT Lieutenant said, clicking the safety off on his gun.

Cas nodded, breathing deep to steady himself. The SWAT team was stretched out behind them, heavily armed and armored. The criminal mastermind who had shot Jo was more like a criminal moron. He hadn’t been hard to track down at all, given that his face had been caught on the store’s security cameras and he was staying two blocks from the store. The SWAT team was probably not necessary, but no one took risks with a failed cop killer.

He didn’t know what Jo’s status was right now though. Last he had heard, she was in surgery and might still be there. The news that she had died would have spread quickly through the department. As he hadn’t heard that from anyone yet, Cas assumed she was still alive and would make it through. She had to make it through.

The SWAT Lieutenant held up three fingers and then folded one down to show two.

If Jo didn’t make it, Cas could guess how bad things would get. Sam would go back to drugs, Dean would go back to trying to save him and he would have to try and save Dean. He didn’t want to think about how the family they had built up around each other would start to fall apart. He relied on this family and while he’d still have Pam if things went to hell it would be a loss. He wasn’t always good at coping with loss.

Another finger went down.

Adrenaline started to course through him and Cas adjusted his grip on his weapon. He didn’t like taking down doors. He didn’t do it all that often. Most arrests were simple, show up and knock on the door. Someone opened the door and they asked for the suspect to come outside. These sort of forced entries were rare and he was in no way used to them. The SWAT guys were almost chomping at the bit to go. They lived for this stuff in a way that Cas couldn’t understand except maybe in this case he did. He wanted through that door too. The guy who shot his friend was inside and damn it Cas wanted a shot at him.

The last finger went down and the tension exploded.

The two SWAT members with the battering ram stepped forward, took one swing and the door caved in. The Lieutenant was through first then Cas right behind him. The suspect ran immediately but it was a crappy one bedroom apartment and he didn’t get far.

“You can take it! You can take it!” He threw the two hundred and thirty-five dollars he had stolen at them. “Didn’t mean to! I didn’t!”

“Shut up!” Cas snapped, trading his gun for his handcuffs.

“Man, man, man…” The suspect tried to cower in a corner of the room, sobbing to himself. “I didn’t mean to. I didn’t mean to.”

“But you did and now you’re under arrest.”

Two SWAT members hauled the guy to his feet and slammed him a bit harder than was needed against the wall. Cas grabbed a flailing arm, twisting it behind his back and snapped on the cuffs.

“You’re hurting me!”

“I'm just returning the favor.”
