AU Fanfiction: In Which Castiel is a Dragon

Dec 03, 2009 00:02

[ooc: I really have no excuse for this one expect I watched a show on dragons and got thinking. TV and an SPN hiatus are dangerous things for me.]

Trouble really started when they made camp the first night. No, actually, trouble had started before that when Dean had tried to run a lance through his heart but they had mutually agreed to not talk about that since Dean had missed and Castiel had gotten them to understand he was a benevolent dragon.

They had been doing relatively well since then but tonight the Fates were against their budding brotherhood. Sam had been trying to light the fire with magic, to hone his skills. His spells had a tendency to either go well or not go at all. Tonight it hadn’t worked. Castiel had seen an opportunity to help when mostly he felt as though he got in the way. He took a deep breath and let forth a belch of fire.

This had startled the horses that had snapped their reins and run off, taking most of the supplies with them. Now they were searching the woods and both the knight and the wizard were angry with him.

Castiel sighed. I apologize, it wasn’t my intention…

“Cas, shut up. I hate it when you do that speaking in my head thing,” Dean glared at him over his shoulder.

I have no other way to speak to you.

“Speak to Sam.”

Sam doesn’t like it either.

“Then shut up. If it’s important, yeah, you can talk, but right now, shut up.”

He sighed again, ducked his head and followed along behind the brothers. He had taken up with the two travelers out of curiosity. Years ago the dragons had removed themselves from human society when they had become too corrupt. The Elder dragons had heard reports that humans were hunting dragons because they had begun to attack human settlements. It explained why Dean had attacked him before Castiel could explain he was hunting these rogue dragons.

Dean and Sam were rescuing a princess who had been kidnapped by the evil King Morningstar. He offered to help in exchange for them taking him to the princess’s father for an audience. It was a mutually beneficial deal but it wasn’t working out exactly as they planned.

“Dean, I don’t think we’re going to be able to find them,” Sam said, “Not until morning at least. I can barely see the tracks.”

“Well don’t you have a spell or something that’ll make them clearer?” Dean sighed in frustration.

“Yes, but it could also destroy them completely.”

Dean turned around to face him, looking up. “You got anything? I thought dragons were supposed to have unlimited magical powers.”

Our powers a limited into a very select few spells, actually. I am a storm making dragon. My abilities lie with weather and the elements. Castiel lowered his head to be more level with the shorter humans. He turned his head so one luminous blue eye was on them and blinked lazily.

“Right, the whole fire breathing act that got us here in the first place,” he sighed. “Man, I love that mare. She’s a good horse.”

Dean went quiet which left him and Sam waiting for whatever he would come up with. Castiel actually had an idea first.

You are welcome to ride me, he offered.

“What?” Dean made a face at him.

I am large enough to easily carry both of you. Tomorrow, at first light, we can survey the forest from the air and find your horses. It will be much quicker.

“Sam, did you hear him?” Dean asked, looking over at his brother.

“Yes and I think he’s got a point. The horses shouldn’t go too far, and even if they do we’ll easily catch up by flying.”

Castiel’s mouth dropped open as he smiled, pleased that they had both actually liked his idea for once.

Of course, like everything else, it all started to go wrong in the morning when they discovered Dean had a fear of flying. His screaming panic was quite distracting but they did find the horses, who were not too keen on traveling with a dragon. At this point, Castiel didn’t think Dean and Sam were either.
