If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountains should crumble to the sea.
Stand by Me - Ben E. King
One day, it was all going to come to an end. Standing off to the side of a crowded sidewalk, Castiel watched the humans as they went about their day completely unaware of the war raging around them. The armies of Heaven and the forces of Hell continually clashed, the results written off as natural disasters and cruel tragedies. Their faith was teetering on the edge, struggled to remain strong.
It was pity Castiel felt for them. They had turned away from God’s love and now wandered through a dark world without a light to guide them. Demons found it easy to corrupt the faithless. It was even easier to corrupt the hopeless and the humans flowing around him were devoid of real hope.
Though it wasn’t his purpose, Castiel wondered how to inspire them, if anything could. What could bring them around and make them see that God had always and would always love them. Even above angels like himself, God loved humanity. There were times when Castiel could see why. Though the crowd was filled with the faithless, there were still good people mixed in, even a few that had faith. These were the people that gave God hope for the rest of the population.
It was his faith in God that kept Castiel fighting for humanity. He would save these people because God had ordered it, because God had faith that these people could be saved. He wouldn’t doubt or fear. With God behind him, Castiel would save these people because right now was not the time for him to lay waste to them.
One day he would be their destroyer, but now he and his brothers worked to be their saviors.
