I miss traditional animation.
Where does this come from? It is mostly my dissatisfaction with Disney, but also because while I still love cartoons, I am older, and look for a more involved story. And, maybe even a moral to the story.
Don’t get me wrong. I really liked Toy Story and The Incredibles but, what was the last feature film that was animated? Everything is done on computers now.
I still watch the Disney Channel and Cartoon network, but even that is overrun with crap. I can think of three cartoons that I watch on a regular basis, and one of those is canceled, and the other is in its last legs (unless the fans can pull off another miracle)
Avatar the Last Airbender
Teen Titans
Kim Possible
I admit it, I really like these shows.
Everything else comes off as mindless, or an overblown toy commercial. There is no story to speak of, and the characters are mindless. (Which is saying something when you stop to think about it)
Does this make me elitist?
I still like the animation that comes out of Japan. It is still a respected medium over there (here) and there are just as many genres as there are in ‘mainstream’ Hollywood. You can do more with animation than you can with flesh and blood actors.
But, like everything else, when you start to step back, you notice that everything is derivative and lacking originality.
