Now that the authors have been revealed...
I wrote two stories for the Dragon challenge this year. Shortly after it was announced, I got an idea for the first one,
On How He Came To Be A Man. The thought was to begin at Chris' birth, so the title would appear to be about him, but then things change at the end. Anyway, it's Chris/Joey and about the bonds of love. Many thanks to
nopseud for beta duties on this one!
The a few days before the deadline, Pen mentioned that 3 writers had pulled out of the challenge, so I wondered if I could come up with something else, because the more, the merrier, right? I decided to challenge myself by writing about something I normally would not write about. I've always remembered this Blender quote from April 2004:
JC: "I’ve only done mushrooms and smoked pot. And I won’t say that I’ll never do those again, because I have a long life in front of me."
I don't remember any stories dealing with him & his 'shrooms experience, so I thought that could be a nice lead in to a dragon story. I'm not into drugs & pretty much know nothing about them, however, I have been around people on pot & other things way back when. So I did a little online research into the effects of mushrooms and found that they lead to vivid colors and imagry, paranoia, hallucinations and the feeling that one has had one's eyes *opened*. So that's what I was getting at. I thought about what JC might experience on his *trip* & how I could incorporate his love of the other guys along with dragons, dwarves & dolphins.
My other challenge to myself was to not change one word of the story once it was written. It would stand as it came out. Which it pretty much did, save for correcting a couple of typos & adding in a couple sentences near the end that had been in my head. The story didn't make as much sense without them. Not that it has to, because it's drugs & they don't make much sense anyway! I wrote this all in one night, about 3 hours, the night before stories were due.
The point is, that he loves his friends & they love him. That his friends are his world. The story is
Breathe.
Congrats to the two people who guessed that I wrote Breathe,
puszysty &
turps33!
