I've been thinking (yeah, dangerous I know), about the stuff that I write. Nine times out of ten I write within my comfort zones, and I guess that is true of many other writers on LJ too. I mainly write Nine/Rose, but now and again I have written Ten and only once I have really got to grips with writing Martha as part of a Ten fic I am doing. But Nine/Rose is my comfort zone. I find it easiest, the ideas come to be more often and I find Nine such a fascinating character that he is a joy to write for, even when I am writing angst.
But is it the right way to go as a writer? I want to get better, I think of myself as a reasonable writer, I want to be a good writer, a fantastic writer. I love writing so I am keen to expand that and get better at it. So should I come out of my comfort zones and experiment with genre's that either I have wrote little of or that I haven't written at all?
So I have a challenge to anyone who wants to take it up; I do it when I have finished up with Winter's Beauty (should be finished within a couple of weeks) and wrote the next chapter of Fractured Reality. Pick a Doctor Who or Torchwood genre you wouldn't normally write and give it a go. If you normally write angst or horror, try some fluff or crack! If you write smut try writing an action adventure with no smut or romance. Never written slash? Give it a go. Always written Doctor/Rose, try Doctor/Martha.
If you are up for the challenge, let me know by replying and what genre/pairing you are thinking about writing. I promise I will rec your fic when its finished.
It might seem like a daunting prospect but we learn and improve though pushing our own boundaries. Anyone up for it?
