Chapter Four
Rose opened her eyes and saw the Doctor directly in front of her and froze. Her heart leapt into her mouth and she felt herself colouring up. She felt herself going hot and cold at the same time and she quickly shut the journal and tried to brush it off her knee and slip it down the side of chair all the while praying a silent and desperate prayer that the Doctor hadn’t seen what she had. She was absolutely horrified and terrified at the same time, her hands were shaking, her palms wet and her knees weak. She couldn’t have stood up even if she had wanted to.
The Doctor had a big toothy grin on his face, his hair was messy and there was sweat patches on his undershirt under his arms. He cocked his head to one side, smiled and seemed to be his usual manic-mind-moving-at-a-trillion-miles-a-second self. He wasn’t even looking at her.
“I think I’ve worked it out. I need a Hydrus conversion crosspoint, now where I can find one is another matter. But I reckon I’ve got it sorted, clever aren’t I? I cant believe its taken me all these years to work it out, its simple really when you think about it, well its simple if you know about temporal mechanics and chameleon technology, like I DO! So all I need to do is find somewhere I can get a second user Hydrus conversion crosspoint, put it in, reconnect all the circuits, throw the switch and BINGO! We’ve got a working chameleon circuit that will adapt to whatever location we arrive in!” The Doctor came right up to Rose, put his hands either side of her face and gave the her the biggest smile she had ever seen him give. His eyes dropped to her lap.
“Oooooh Rose, what have you got there?”
Rose’s heart fell into her trainers. For a moment she had thought the Doctor hadn’t noticed, that he was too preoccupied with the possibility of fixing the chameleon circuit to notice her trying to hide the Journal down the side of the chair. She swallowed and her eyes widened in apprehension.
“I……. I haven’t read any…..I just found it…….next to a book of children’s stories…….I just picked it up, wondered what it was……I…….” Rose’s voice trailed off and she knew that the Doctor knew that she was lying. Her heart was thumping and she had an overwhelming feeling of panic washing over her. Her palms were sweaty, she was far too hot, she couldn’t stop shaking and she had that ominous feeling of dread in her stomach.
“Rose…” The Doctor looked at Rose, his face was impassive and she couldn’t work out what he was feeling. “I didn’t read any of it” she lied. Rose was panicking now, flapping her hands in front of her face.
“Rose, its……” The Doctor’s eyebrows raised and his forehead wrinkled, he brought his hands up and tried to take Rose by the shoulders. Rose knocked his hands away.
“You shouldn’t have left me alone for the last 3 days. Its not on, I’ve had enough. I’ve been wandering round the TARDIS trying to find something to do while you’ve been obsessed with that damn circuit. You know you will never fix the bloody thing.” Her fear and panic were becoming anger by this time. Anger directed towards the Doctor for virtually ignoring her for the last 3 days. Rose wasn’t usually envious when it came to the Doctor, but she sensed that when it came to his affections, she came a very poor second place to the TARDIS. She was also angry at herself, angry for not having more self control when she found the journal, and shameful anger that she had been caught.
“Rose, please….” The Doctor’s expressions were becoming a little desperate by this time.
“Have you any idea what its like wandering around the TARDIS with nobody to talk to…….” Immediately Rose felt foolish. Of course he knew what that was like.
“Rose, will you li…….”
“Just take me home will you? I wanna see my Mum”. With that Rose stomped out of the library. Once through the door she ran as fast as she could to her bedroom. Diving down under the bed she pulled out her rucksack and started to stuff various items of clothing and toiletries into it. When she had finished she sat down on the bed and put her head in hands, her mind a whirl, wondering how on earth she was going to salvage something for this situation. Rose felt ashamed, angry, more than angry she felt outraged. Just who the hell was he to have a go at her when she had spent God knows how long, trying to entertain herself, feeling shit, feeling alone, feeling unwanted, feeling unloved…
Rose felt tears prickle in her eyes, she banged her fists onto the bed where she was sat. Oooooh he could be so damn infuriating at times, so bloody holier than thou, Mr Butter Wouldn’t Sodding Melt, Mr Oh No It Doesn’t Matter That I Have This Person Madly In Love With Me - I’ll Just Ignore Her While I Fix My Precious TARDIS, Rose absolutely raged. The TARDIS jolted and Rose realised they had re-materialised. It had better be Home, she thought. Slinging her backpack over her shoulder she stood up and made for the control room. She didn’t even look at the Doctor while she marched out of the door.
