Chapter Three: The End

Holding her in his arms, he kissed her deeply, trying to draw the Time Vortex from her mind. She went limp, and he took her weight. Golden light streamed from her eyes into his. Breaking away from the kiss, he gently placed Rose on the floor then stood up and turned towards the TARDIS. Exhaling, the Time Vortex left the Doctors body and streamed back to the TARDIS. Turning back to Rose, the Doctor checked her vital signs, she was barely alive, quickly he picked her up and carried her into the TARDIS. The doors slammed shut behind him. Laying her down next to the console, the Doctor frantically pulled levers and flicked switches, sending the TARDIS back into the vortex.

Sitting down beside her, the Doctor lifted Rose’s head and put it on his lap. Her eyes fluttered open and she looked at him, a look of confusion and pain in her eyes. “What happened?” she whispered weakly, the Doctor could barely hear her.

“You took the Time Vortex into your mind. Rose you shouldn’t have done that, human’s aren’t designed to be able to take that. Its hard enough for Gallifreyans….” His mind was drawn back to Satellite 5, when he felt the voice of the Time Lords for the first time in so long, such a beautiful song. He listened now, nothing. He’d actually dared to hope that it could be true, but everything was silent again……. She hadn’t had the strength to complete the greatest gift that anyone could ever give him. She must have known what it would do to her, the TARDIS would have given her the choice, he thought. Yet knowing all this, she had willingly sacrificed herself for him and for the whole of humanity. He caressed her face, gently soothing her, trying to prepare her for the inevitable, knowing he could do nothing to prevent it. The Doctor felt so helpless, he had never felt so insignificant in his whole, long life. Bending forward he kissed her again, tenderly on the lips.

“Doctor, I love you” Tears were streaming down her face again, her breathing was becoming more laboured. He could feel her mind screaming into his, so much pain, pain he would do anything to take away. His Rose, the Time Vortex had burnt her, he knew that. He had tried to take it from her, but he knew it was too late. In trying to make her gift to him, she had condemned herself.

“Rose, I love y………” She was gone, her chest still, eyes closed. He instinctively knew she was gone.
