Bill Barr’s Above the Law. The Only Answer Is to Impeach Him.
The special counsel regulations don’t contemplate investigating a potentially corrupt AG-because a corrupt AG would never invoke the regulations to investigate himself.
Asha Rangappa
Updated Jun. 22, 2020
https://www.thedailybeast.com/attorney-general-bill-barrs-above-the-law-the-only-answer-is-to-impeach-him?ref=home The latest casualty of Bill Barr’s 16-month rampage through the Justice Department is Geoffrey Berman, who until Saturday had been the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. That office has been investigating Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, among other cases of interest to the president.
On Friday, Barr tried to bamboozle the country (and, apparently, bully Berman himself) into believing that Berman had resigned his post. Berman’s day-long standoff with Barr, in which he refused to resign, included a public letter that was an S.O.S. to anyone paying attention, as he assured the public that the “office’s important cases would continue unimpeded”-suggesting that Barr was attempting to obstruct justice by removing him, which Barr ultimately succeeded in doing.
The problem is that even if Barr is attempting to obstruct justice, the current legal landscape essentially gives him a vacuum in which to do so unimpeded-unless he is impeached.

William Barr Has Turned the Justice Department Into a Law Firm With One Client: Donald Trump
James Risen
22 June 2020
https://theintercept.com/2020/06/22/william-barr-has-turned-the-justice-department-into-a-law-firm-with-one-client-donald-trump/ The corruption and politicization of the Department of Justice under William Barr is now complete. It will take a generation to reestablish its credibility and independence.
Under Barr, the Department of Justice has two objectives: to suppress any investigation of President Trump and his associates, and to aggressively pursue investigations of his political rivals. The attorney general has turned the Justice Department into a law firm with one client: Donald Trump. Barr doesn’t even hide his intentions any longer.
In May, after Barr moved to drop the charges against Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser - even after Flynn had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI - Barr defended his actions in the case by saying that “history is written by the winners.” That is the kind of statement that might be expected from an amoral bureaucrat in a police state rather than the chief law enforcement officer of the United States.
Barr’s latest move to protect Trump came over the weekend, when he fired Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. One of the nation’s most important federal prosecutors, Berman has been conducting a series of sensitive investigations into Trump associates. Berman prosecuted Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal lawyer, and has prosecuted two associates of Rudy Giuliani, who is another Trump personal lawyer. Berman also brought charges against a Turkish state-owned bank in a case in which Turkey’s autocratic president has personally sought Trump’s help.
Barr clearly thought that Berman was causing too much trouble for Trump - so he decided to fire Berman and install Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Jay Clayton, a Trump golfing buddy with no experience as a prosecutor, into the position. Barr tried to push Berman out late Friday night, no doubt thinking that a nation distracted by a pandemic and protests would barely notice.
But Berman refused to go quietly. He quickly saw Barr’s move for exactly what it was: a raw attempt to shut down ongoing Trump-related investigations. Berman announced that he was refusing to leave, leading to a dramatic standoff.

Trump falsely accuses Obama of treason in latest unfounded attack on his predecessor
By Paul LeBlanc, CNN
Updated 9:01 PM ET, Mon June 22, 2020
https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/22/politics/trump-obama-treason-claim/index.html [EDITOR: REMEMBER - THEY ALWAYS ACCUSE THE OPPOSITION OF WHAT THEY'RE GUILTY OF THEMSEVES]
(CNN)President Donald Trump has falsely accused former President Barack Obama of committing treason in his latest unfounded accusation aimed at his predecessor.
Trump for months has publicly accused Obama of committing crimes, but has repeatedly declined to say which crimes in particular when asked by reporters. But speaking with CBN News in an interview that aired Monday, Trump offered, without evidence, that Obama had committed treason for spying on his campaign.
"It's treason," Trump said. "Look, when I came out a long time ago, I said they've been spying on my campaign. I said they've been taping, and that was in quotes, meaning a modern day version of taping, it's all the same thing. But a modern day version. But they've been spying on my campaign."
In reality, there is no evidence that the Obama spied on Trump's campaign or committed any acts that reach the definition of treason. Under the Constitution, treason is narrowly defined: "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."

But what I want ask you first is a very simple question. Why is this the book President Trump doesn't want anyone to read?
JOHN BOLTON: Because this is a book of facts. It's not a book of theories or accusations or emotional responses. What I've tried to do is write 500 pages of facts, of history, that show how decisions were made in the national security field and the Trump administration.
And I think what it shows is a couple things: number one that foreign policy and defense policy are not motivated by philosophy, grand strategy or policy. This is not a conservative administration nor is policy made in a coherent, competent way. And I think these are things the American people need to know about. I obviously have conclusions and thoughts of my own in the book. But the main purpose is to lay out facts, let people read the book, and they can make up their own mind.
RADDATZ: So why wouldn't President Trump want to know about those facts?
BOLTON: Because I think it shows a pattern quite contrary to the image he would like to convey, of a decisive president who knows something about what he's doing. There really isn't any guiding principle -- that I was able to discern other than-- what's good for Donald Trump's reelection.

Prosecutor to tell Congress of pressure from ‘highest levels’ of Justice Dept. to cut Roger Stone ‘a break’

Barr and his top deputies issued inappropriate orders amid investigations and trials “based on political considerations” and a desire to cater to President Trump.
Aaron Zelinsky, an assistant U.S. attorney in Maryland formerly detailed to Robert S. Mueller III’s Russia investigation, will tell the House Judiciary Committee that prosecutors involved in the criminal trial of Trump’s friend Roger Stone experienced “heavy pressure from the highest levels of the Department of Justice to cut Stone a break” by requesting a lighter sentence, according to Zelinsky’s prepared remarks. The expectation, he intends to testify, was that Stone should be treated “differently and more leniently” because of his “relationship with the President.”
Zelinsky will be joined by John Elias, an official in the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division, who will say that Barr ordered staff to investigate marijuana company mergers simply because he “did not like the nature of their underlying business,” according to his prepared testimony.
