I was going to write another election post, one that involved phrases to Trump voters like, “be a rationalist for one minute longer, voter, what is your analysis?” - but I just couldn’t.

But I still want to reach out to those mostly straight white guys who don’t understand why queers, people of colour - hell, women in general - are in such fear

Those few straight white guys who are afraid of something are afraid of something imaginary, and on some level they know it.

For a nonzero number, it's truly just a game.

For a much larger number, they like Mr. Trump because of his misogyny and abuse of women. That's not hypothetical, I've watched Trump supporters say that, and you don't have to dig hard to find it -

For a similarly larger number, they like Mr. Trump because of his racism. That's why they're in it.

I don't care about, and will not reach, any of those people. (Well, maybe a few of the "all just a game" people might snap out of that, but I wouldn't bet on it.)

I'm trying to reach the same ones I tried to reach with my essay on why sometimes you need to lose an election, and why voting for Mr. Johnson is a good idea for rational Republicans this year. I don't think I will succeed. But I wanted to give it one last try.
