A Fistful of Fic Recs
So, as a side-effect of being unemployed, I've managed to read a truly scandalous amount of fic lately. Some of that fic has been really, really good, so I thought it was time for a recs post. Here I bring you Round 1 (hopefully "Round ONLY") of "SolarCat's Unemployment Fic Recs!"
A lot of these are long, they're from a hodgepodge of various fandoms, and some of them are years old. I'm reccing them anyway. Hopefully you'll find something good to read, dear f-list. Recs are under the cut, sorted by fandom (NCIS, Supernatural RPS, Entourage, A Knight's Tale, The Devil Wears Prada, Torchwood).
NCIS

Summary: How Tony Dinozzo started working for NCIS.
Why I Loved It: For one? It's over 60,000 words long, which hits my long!fic addiction center just right. But the best part is that it's over 60k words of really, really good drama, as Gibbs and then-Detective DiNozzo hunt down a serial child-rapist and killer, dealing meanwhile with Tony's increasingly-hostile partner and equally hostile Baltimore PD. Tony has issues that are very believable here, and the inevitability of his coming to work for Gibbs NCIS just builds so nicely. I mean, we all know it's inevitable, but by the time you get to the end of this fic, you realize that really, there was no other way it could be. Plus, the plot is incredibly good. Just the right levels of drama and tension and a case that feels real. This was definitely a "couldn't put it down" fic for me.

Title: Christmas Miracle

Summary: Gibbs gets a Christmas Miracle
Why I Loved It: Okay, so this really... isn't the best fic ever. I mean, I'll just say that straight out. But it is good, and it wins my love for being Christmas first-time fic which manages to open with Tony being dead and manages to include tremendous amounts of Gibbs-angst and somehow end up happy and sweet. And it's Christmas first-time fic. ...I possibly have an addiction. But as much as the premise is a little bit campy (in a good way!! ♥ ), it's a nice little fic, and a good bite of lighter fare before the next fic on my list, here. And trust me, if you read the next one, you're gonna need it.

Title: Sensing Evil

Summary: While being stalked by something not entirely human, someone casts a spell on Tony that changes his life forever.
Why I Loved It: Wait! I know, that summary has scared you tremendously. Take a moment. Look at the author's name again. It's okay, I promise. In fact, it's a pretty amazing fic, and, again, hits my long!fic kink. Basically, there's a big supernatural nasty that's killing people in really, really nasty ways. (I will warn everyone right now--this fic features some GORE. I mean GORE. I was actually queasy at points; if you've got a very good imagination and get grossed out easily, you may wish to tread carefully here.) Tony gets superpowers (no, really), gets Gibbs, saves the world, etc. etc. The supernatural stuff is well done and pretty cool, the plot is creepy and intense. It's definitely worth a read, imho. (But like I said--GORE. I don't think I can warn enough for this. It's worth it to read the fic, but you may wish to have some fluffy WAFF waiting in another tab, in case you need a quick abort.)

Supernatural RPS
Title: Yes Sir (I Don't Mean Maybe)

Summary: The path to parenthood is full of complications for Jared and Jensen, who are forced to take part in a trendy parenting class to improve their chances at adoption. Can they survive encounters with obsessive tabloid reporters and nosy talk-show hosts, handle the needs of a very special robot and resist the gravitational pull of the small planet called Vin Diesel? Will they come through unscathed and unscarred on the other side of this story? Will there be schmoop? (Spoiler: There will be schmoop.)
Why I Loved It: Um. Do you need more than the summary? Really? Okay, fine. Read the prologue. If you don't desperately want to know where this story is going by the time you get through with Jensen and the drunken beef jerky caper, I'm not sure why you're on my f-list.

Why I Loved It: Cute. Schmoopy at points. Wonderful moments of awkwardness. Platonic bed-sharing/cuddling that really isn't so platonic, even if it takes a while for the bed-sharers to figure that out. Did I mention cute?? CUTE. Srsly.

Title: Here's Us Together

Summary: This is a series, so there's not an overall summary. Basically, Vince and Eric have a thing. It becomes a Thing.
Why I Loved It: This fic is brilliant. The characterization is spot-on, the story feels incredibly real. There are 7 stories of varying length in the series, and the author didn't pull any punches when it comes to the angsty bits. But you really feel that yeah, once they get through all of it, these guys are going to be together forever, because they've been together forever. Plus, Vince's Golden Globe speech at the end of "People Come Around" is beautiful and perfect and so Vince. Just... ♥ This is one of my favorite fics evar.

Summary: Edward goes hunting, with Will as his prey.
Why I Loved It: Really, really good porn. I mean really, really good porn. And it's Edward/Will, of which, more needs to exist. Especially if it's like this. LadyJackyl writes some good AKT fic, my friends. This is the shortest fic on this recs list, which makes me sad. I could easily read another 40 or 50k more words of this, but if I have to read a short fic? This will do quite nicely. =3

The Devil Wears Prada
Title: Truth and Measure

Pairing: Miranda/Andy
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Andy doesn't leave Miranda in Paris, and learns that a single decision can change your life. But the main thing about decisions? You don't get to stop with one.
Why I Loved It: Holy shit, is this fic good. Normally, I am not a femslash person. In this case? I make a huge, huge exception. Telanu is twelve kinds of awesome, and has created a long, excellent plot that's believable and interesting. Plus, the sex is... *ahem*. I might have to stop writing this rec just to go take a cold shower. This is LONG!fic of the highest order, but is well worth the time. Plus, it's also available as a text file, for those of you who like offline reading.

Torchwood
Title: Get Loved, Make More, Try to Stay Alive

Pairing: Jack/Ianto. Less than 19% mpreg by volume.
Rating: R-ish
Summary: "When we don't die young and violently, we die weird. Well, or all three, case in point."
Why I Loved It: The author describes this as "the Torchwood Epic of Ridiculousness and Doom". And, yeah, pretty much that's exactly right. But it's also moving, emotional, gorgeous, and you know it's good because it's mpreg and I'm reccing it to you. But then, it's not really mpreg. Yes, the baby has two daddies, but it's also not like that, and Ianto's angst and how much he gives up just punched me in the gut. I don't even have words for the hours of emotional rollercoaster ride that are this fic. Suffice it to say, the ride is incredible, the catharsis is wonderful, and this fic will be on my favorites list for a long, long time to come. (And despite being all of two days old at this point, it's already being recced... everywhere? So I'm not the only one who will tell you--READ THIS FIC.)
