Thor - The Dark World

There may be those of you out there in interwebland that are unfamiliar with the Avengers films. If you are one of those, then I would not recommend Thor - The Dark World. It's not that it's a bad film, far from it, it's that the movie expects you to have at least seen the previous Thor and The Avengers. Now I know what you're thinking, "Does that mean John Steed and Mrs Peel show up?" Sadly, no. I refer to the 2012 Marvel film titled The Avengers, not the wonderful sci-fi TV show.

While I do consider it to be somewhat of a flaw that this is a mere episode rather than a standalone movie, it is still an excellent episode in the Avengers series. It picks up with Loki being brought back to Asgard to be imprisoned for his many crimes across Earth, Asgard, and Jotunheim. In the meantime, Thor is busy trying to bring peace to the realms and Jane is in England tracking down science. All this while our villain Malekith (as portrayed by the Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston) is working on a scheme that will plunge our universe into darkness.

The movie suffers a little where the Malekith is concerned. He isn't particularly fleshed out and we are left to assume his motivation to bring darkness is simply because he didn't succeed the last time he tried. I have the distinct feeling more was written for him but did not make it to the theaters.

Beyond a few missing motivators, the movie is enjoyable. The acting is top-notch by all those involved. The visuals are very pretty. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman are great as Thor and Jane, but the scene is stolen whenever Kat Dennings (Darcy) or Tom Hiddleston (Loki) are on screen, not to mention Anthony Hopkins, who never brings a performance that is less than his best.

Overall, it was a fun movie. Not the greatest, but still definitely worth hitting up on the big screen. And as always with the Marvel films, stick around through the credits for a teaser of what lies ahead...
