Shutter Island

Last night I went out to see the new film Shutter Island and I'm glad that I did.  For a while I was on the fence as to whether I wanted to catch it in the theatres or wait until it hit video.  I think I've stated which of those options I eventually settled on, so I'll move on.

I haven't seen to many of Martin Scorcese's movies, but the ones I recall are very well made.  This is no exception.  From the opening scenes I was drawn in to the ambience of it all.  The scoring wasn't original, but instead drew from mostly classical music that ended up fitting the scenes better than a newly composed piece probably could.  The acting was also top-notch.  While I wasn't a big fan of Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic, and usually think of him from Critters III, he was great in his role of a Federal Marshal who, during his time in the Army, was part of the team that discovered the Dachau work-camp.  Playing against him was the likes of Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow, and even Ted Levine, all very sinister in their own ways.

The story follows the Marshall on his investigation into a missing patient at a secluded maximum-security psychiatric institute for the criminally insane.  And while searching through it all, learns about a possible conspiracy involving black ops government funding.  I don't want to go into too much more detail, sufficed to say that even if you're not the type to be into government conspiracies, this is still a movie to go see as there is so much more to the plot, and if nothing else, the island it was filmed on is just beautiful.  The whole thing is simply amazing.
