HISTORY: Xion's beginnings were in Castle Oblivion, created by Organization XIII's Vexen as an imperfect Replica of Sora from leaked memories that escaped him as he slept to restore his own memories. From Sora's memories, Xion resembles Kairi to an extent, as memories of Kairi are strong in the Keyblade Master's mind, but depending on who looks upon her, Xion can appear to be Sora, Vexen, or just simply a hooded doll to some. Though flawed to some, since Xion came from Sora, she is able to wield the Keyblade, just as Sora and Roxas can, which becomes one of the critical plot points of Days' storyline.
Even though, in the beginning of the game, Xion is inducted formally into the Organization by the Organization's leader, Xemnas, she is never really accepted as a true, official member, as she received no "throne" to sit upon like the rest of the Organization. In fact, people are simply led to believe she's another new Nobody, when, technically, she is not. When Axel leaves for Castle Oblivion to deal with the traitors within the Organization, Roxas is charged with Xion on some missions. At first, she is just as quiet as Roxas was when he first started out, but eventually opens up to him, even saying his name as the first things that truly came out of her mouth.
By spending several more missions with her, it is found out that, on a mission to exterminate a Darkside, Xion can use the Keyblade. At one point, Roxas falls under a coma, to which Xion spends the time watching over him when she can, and places seashells she finds from the worlds she visits near his pillow for every day that he sleeps. It's noted in a secret report that, during this, she felt she heard the sound of the ocean lapping on the shores, but did not know why. Axel comes back from the events of Castle Oblivion to find Roxas and Xion as friends with each other during the time he was away; it's also interesting to note that Axel sees Xion as a hooded doll, but when the game panels back to Roxas's view, Xion's hood is down. It isn't long before Axel accepts her for who she is herself, and the three begin eating sea-salt ice cream together at Twilight Town's train station's tower. From this point on, Xion holds and develops a strong bond with Roxas and Axel, specifically Roxas, as they all note that Xion and Roxas seem to be "special Nobodies". Axel even helps out with finding a solution when Xion is unable to use the Keyblade for a time and she was afraid that her superiors would find out and deem her useless. With the help of Roxas, Xion regains the use of her Keyblade, to which she thanks the both of them for the help that they had given, thereby the trio grows even closer.
All good things must fall apart at some point, and for Xion, things spiral down into confusion and distress when she botches badly on trying to deal with an Organization XIII imposter, who is revealed to be Riku. During the encounter, he tells her that her "Keyblade is a sham", to which she responds in anger and tries to attack him, but again, fails. It is from this point on that Xion begins to distance herself from the trio and the Organization as she tries to find out about her origins, which she does when exploring Castle Oblivion. Another encounter with Riku further solidifies her status as a Replica, a puppet created by Organization XIII to gradually absorb the Keyblade Master's powers via Roxas so that the Organization could have someone who uses the Keyblade under their control. From this same encounter, she is given the choice to return to Sora right then and there, and give back the memories he lost that are slowing his memory restoration, or be given some more time to think, as Xion felt that she needed her friends just as much as they needed her.
