THIRD PERSON: It was the lack of hum from Serenity's engine that woke her, sitting upright and alert, wide eyes looking around frantically. This was not the ship, she knew this much, but was it a hallucination? Or was she still dreaming? River could not tell, sometimes her hallucinations and reality merged into one another, mixing in brilliant colors spinning and weaving, until they started to sing in a voice like her own. Speaking in riddles of things that did not make sense, but at the same time made all the sense in the world. And no one listened.

"Simon?"

River stepped carefully over dead bodies, silently, like she was playing some game of hide and seek and she must not be caught. Voices, images, screams and feelings all playing in her head as she walked, the girl cringed and shied away the best she could, the screams of a mother begging for her child's life to be spared dancing in her ears, the sound of a blade being rammed into her chest. River didn't like it here, it was noisy, loud, they talked at her when she did not want to listen, but she couldn't shut them out. They were so loud -- she jumped, a gunshot drew her attention to a man, cutting his way through the pirates bleeding a little from his wounds. To anyone else who happened upon River would merely see a girl staring blankly in space, unaware of world around her, but in her eyes she could see the remnants of a battle, flashing wildly as the man moved.

He was gray.

Another shot and he was gone. Leaving an empty street only littered with debris and bodies. She stared, for a little while longer before moving on, carefully, cautiously, wondering when the dream would end and she would wake up on Serenity. But she knew, she knew, she wasn't going back. Not now.

And then she saw black, a boy shorter than the gray one, but he fought with just as much ferocity. River titled her head, eyes wide with wonder, much like that of a child staring at a brand new toy. Jumping only when his arm was dislocated, only to watch him push it back in. Then the boy left her sight completely. River had half the mind to follow after him, the ghost of what had happened in this place, but the thought was discarded as the voices started again. Singing in a chorus.

"No no no, be quiet. Stop talking, stop talking. Simon? Simon where are you!?" She was alone, all alone in the barren street and the voices, the dead would not stop screaming.
JOURNAL:

[ there is a rapid flipping through pages, when it stops she tries to rip the page that records her words out ]

It's not logical, it is only paper. Not a holographic pad programmed to look like a book. [ rips that page out too ] Stop doing that.

[ another rip ] You have no right to take her from there. Put her back. Take me back to Simon. [ her voice becomes obviously distressed ]

I don't like this game, stop hiding. Simon.
