Seven months after they first arrived on Serenity, Simon suggested a raid St. Lucy's hospital on the planet Ariel, while there he intended on using one of the machines to figure out what the Academy had done to River. At first River did not want to go, after all she hates hospital and in order to get into the hospital, they had to be dead for only a few moments. She eventually agreed and they got in and while Mal and Zoe stole a load of medical supplies, River, Simon and Jayne went to find out what had happened to River's mind. And they found out, but they were betrayed by Jayne and captured by the Alliance.
That in itself was a very bad mistake.
It was on Aerial that they had a close in encounter with the Blue Hands Men, a team of two who had come to capture River and kill anyone who had encountered her. Having sensed them, with Jayne's help they managed to break out only to have River lead them out of harms way frantically and managed to meet back up with Mal. They then escaped the planet with a lot of medical supplies and with the skin on their backs. Some time after that Mal and Wash, the ship's pilot, were captured by a man they had practically betrayed once before, Wash was returned to them but Mal kept, so in a effort to save Mal the crew stormed in to rescue him leaving Kaylee behind to hold the fort.
But she was pinned down by three men, so River came to help. She looked at them once before taking the gun, muttering to herself "don't look don't look" then with her eyes closed shot all three dead. Saving Kaylee but scaring her to death at the same time.
Five months later they were hailed by a group of unregistered companions, who needed help as they were being harassed by a rather unkindly fellow in the town nearby. While River played little part in the battle that followed, she sat by and watched as Simon delivered one of the girl's baby. Once the girls were safe and unlikely to be harassed again they left and River went to doing what she usually did, and the ship flew on with no real course in mind.
PERSONALITY: River was once a bright girl who had a thirst for knowledge and an enthusiasm to learn everything she could, including how to dance. She was funny, friendly and playful, always full of new ideas for games and how to win them; but this has changed, dramatically. River now is almost nothing like she used to be, broken, fractured by the government her parents trusted.
Now River speaks in riddles, a sign of how the trauma and lack of emotional filter (amygdala) has changed her perception of the world around her, she will speak without realizing what she is saying, act without knowing what she is doing. Sometimes she simply cannot control herself may it be attacking someone with a knife, or spilling their secrets for the world to hear. Other time she sounds as if she is speaking completely gibberish, nonsensical words often linked together by a song or some sort of morbid speech. If one pays close attention you would notice that even in that madness she is able to make connections between what she knows in order to be able to understand the world around her.
