Everything hurts.

There’s a bloody bruise at the corner of his mouth from being slugged in the face by one of the government men, and each time he sucks in a ragged breath his ribs ache painfully. He wants to give up,  collapse and never rise again, but his mother is counting on him, so he pushes onward.

To his chest Sanghyuk cradles a metal necklace pendant, roughly the size of a quarter. Carved on it is a three-spiked crown. He doesn’t know what it means- his mother didn’t have time to tell him, pressed it quickly into his hands and told him to run.

He’s sprinting through an Underground tunnel, feet splashing in the murky ankle-deep water. His loud, rapid breaths echo against the walls and he tries to muffle them for fear of someone hearing him.

But it’s too late- the sound of the sensor triggering (a barely perceptible click) is his only warning before a bomb implanted in the tunnel wall just behind him goes off. It sets off a series of explosions and Sanghyuk is thrown to the ground, slamming against the railing along the walkway. His head hits one of the metal bars and opens a wound near his hairline, and he feels warm blood start to run down his face when he stumbles back to his feet.

Sanghyuk takes a moment to glance down at the pendant. It’s safe- a bit scratched, but the surface is still smooth and silver.

He needs to get out of here. He starts running again.

Approximately forty-nine meters under the surface of the Aboveground, in an area known simply as “the Underground,” Cha Hakyeon sits alone at a table in the center of their base. A small book sits untouched on the surface of the table along with a handgun. He’s playing with a metal necklace pendant, tossing the object up and down in one hand, before he sighs and clips it to the chain hanging around his neck.

“Hakyeon!”

Wonshik bursts into the room and he looks up. “Yes?”

“Han Sanghyuk. The government forces attacked his house today, demanded his mom to hand him over. He managed to escape but now he’s leading them in a wild goosechase ‘cross the Underground tunnels. He won’t last long, so do you want him or not? ‘S now or never.”

Hakyeon stands up, throws on a black coat with a three-spiked crown stitched inconspicuously on its lapel that matches Wonshik’s. “Call the others. Let’s go.”

Choi Minho, his feet kicked up on the table, watches the security camera feed as a boy with white-blond hair tears through the tunnel with failing energy, three of his men hounding in pursuit. His eyes glint with a predatory delight and he sits back. So close. So, so close to capturing one of them.

After Wonshik’s announcement of their rescue of Han Sanghyuk, Hongbin remembers immediately who the boy is (having the ability to manipulate memories comes in handy at times like these). Han Sanghyuk, as he recalls, is young- barely eighteen- and lives with his single mother in the dark slums of the Aboveground, working shifts at a dingy store to support himself and his mother. It’s sad, but Hongbin has heard worse.

His part of the plan is simply the aftermath. Taekwoon, the most experienced in combat and martial arts, will do the psychical part of swooping in to snatch up their target alone once Jaehwan disables the security cameras, and if worst comes to worst Taekwoon can always just use his telekinesis to lift a boulder or something and crush the men like ants.

There’s no guarantee that those government shitstains won’t send in backup, though, Hakyeon adds at their quick little impromptu plan meeting, so Jaehwan will stay and lurk in the shadows to help Taekwoon if the need arises.

The rescue is a small affair, only a few men to dispatch and one boy to whisk away, and as such there’s no need for their leader or co-leader (Hakyeon and Wonshik, respectively) to take part. That leaves Hongbin, and all he has to do is hop in after everything’s been done and wipe the men’s memories.

Plain and simple, Hakyeon says. .

Taekwoon gives the metal hatch a little shove, just enough to open a sliver of a crack. He presses an eye against it and glances warily about the Underground tunnel. Expectedly, there are cameras dotting the ceiling, each about seven feet away from the previous, turning and swiveling every few seconds.

He draws back and glances at Jaehwan, who beams and nods and moves forwards. Taekwoon watches his figure hover near the hatch for a moment, the outline of his pretty face silhouetted by the tiny bit of light from the tunnel as he concentrates, before Jaehwan too steps away and gives him a thumbs up. “I've disabled them all,” he whispers (breathes, because absolutely no one is allowed to hear them).

Taekwoon wordlessly moves back to hatch, but just as he’s about to push it open, Jaehwan catches him with a hand on his arm and leans forward to press a kiss to his cheek.

“Good luck,” Jaehwan murmurs into his skin and Taekwoon rests their foreheads together for just one second, and then he’s slipping into the tunnel and away.
