So why do you think Gene is so important/special (either to this place or to Alex/Sam)? Oh man. Well there have been quite the number of theories about Gene, but to be quite honest up until this series I was way more focused on figuring out Alex. (I still am but the show keeps making it be all about Gene now. :P) So to answer your question I shall point you to more theories. Have you read the SUPERTHEORY? It definitely talks about Gene in an interesting way. I tend to see him as someone who has inside knowledge. Not evil, just charged with taking care of this world. I think he knows they're all dead but isn't supposed to let them know. And there's a theory going around which I totally agree with, that when Gene told that guy "the truth" he just showed him what the reality was. That everyone was dead. So the guy freaked out because he could see Gene with half his face blown off and then Alex came over and he could see her head wound and freaked out with, "Get away from me!"
I also think that the fact that Gene and Keats are both DCIs is very important. Also the fact that last ep introduced a third DCI to the mix, like a Holy Trinity. And as we saw in 3x04, unlike Gene who has cradled the dying "good guys," Keats comforted someone who was ultimately a "bad guy." (It was actually one of my favorite scenes from the whole show.)
A weather vane? I don't remember this one. Can you give me an example when this appeared? Sure. The weather vane has been appearing in every episode (I think) so far this series. It's first shown when Alex watches the news footage of the young cop's body being discovered. Then it subsequently appeared in moments of Alex having her various ~crazy times~. And like I mentioned before, the weather vane itself is in the shape of Father Time.
I reeeeally hope Sam actually makes an appearance at the end. I've been waiting for an Alex/Sam scene forever. I agree! All I want is for some Alex/Sam interaction! If Simm made it to the studio to film some scenes they kept that insanely Top Secret tho.
Before your answer, one theory I had for the numbers was that that was the date that Gene died. That's a good theory! Everyone first thought that ghost!Gene was dressed in a very old uniform. :)

I loved that scene so much.
Weather vane! Aah! So cool! I never would have spotted that. Thank god for fandom/internet.
